In 1989 we were 22 and 23 years old. Larry had just graduated from Chico State with a BA in History. I had just been accepted to the undergraduate writing program at Santa Cruz. The Beacon gas station where Larry held court as the counter attendant and local orator closed for reconstruction. I had no job and my sister/roommate was leaving for Europe. The culmination of these developments led to a month of temporary work moving gummi bears around on forklifts and an epic journey from Santa Cruz, CA to New York City and back in a well rusted, early `70's model International Scout, with a lifetimes worth of tales in between, 27 states in 28 days on less than $400 cash and a 76 card. Now, a decade, five children and two ex-wives later, the intent is to embark on another cross country excursion, this time with our sons, a few more dollars and a few more precautions.
