Edward Mason born circa 1746 in England. He was shanghaied from Liverpool, England
and brought to the Colonies at about the age of 17 . He arrived in Charleston, S.C.
in 1762. Edward was sold as an indentured servant to the widow of Archibald Rhea,
working off his indenture to this family in the part of Augusta Co. which later became
Wythe Co. VA. After the War, he moved his family to N.C. and lived in Iredell Co.
In Edward's application for Revolutionary War Pension, he indicated that he served
as a private for eight months in the Co. of Capt. Campbell in the regiment commanded
by Col. Campbell in the Virginia line. During his enlistment he saw duty at King's
Mountain under Col. Francis Marion.
Edward Mason married Nancy /Elizabeth
? Russell about 1778 in Aspenvale, Wythe, VA. He received 99 acres of land in the
District south of Holston and French Broad in Knox Co. TN by land grant from Gov.
William Blount in 1807. His children were Polly who married Sutton and lived in Monroe
Co. TN., Abigail;, Rebecca who married Jacob Kean in Knox Co. TN,; James born between
1779 and 1782 in Wythe Co. VA.; Elizabeth ; and William .
In 1824 James Mason
son of Edward Mason received a land grant for 160 acres in Monroe Co. TN. James and
his brother William built and operated one of the first mills in Eastern Tennessee.
The mill was built of logs with a mill-race which carried water down from the mountains
to furnish the power for grinding.

Rufus Morganton Mason was the 7 th child of James Mason and Nancy Rogers. During the Civil War, Rufus M. Mason served in both the Confederate Army and the Union Army.
