Webelos Campout

On the weekend of Friday July 25th thru July 28th the Josh and myself attended the yearly Webelos (Cub Scout) campout. This year's dates was one of the hotest all summer. The temperatures were in the high 80's to mid 90's all 4 days, and the humidity was about the same. All the same we had a great time and learned many new things.

Here we line up Having picture taken
Here we are lining up at the local school to get set for the drive to the campground. We car pooled, yet it still took 4 vans to get us and our equipment all there.

Arrival at the lodge The tents we use
This is the lodge that was the center of our camping area. Scattered around it were the many individual camp sites. I think that ours was one of the largest and best. We were in a clearing that opened onto a small stream that connects the swimming lake and another nearby lake. Here you can see the campsite and tents as we were arriving at the site.

Camp kitchen Meal time
We soon made ourselves at home and set our campground up. You can see us here having one of our meals.

Assembly at lodge Flag at assembly
Each morning and evening we assembled at the lodge and had a flag ceremony. Here you can see the group gathered for one of the flag lowering ceremonies.

the Beach Trail back from the Beach
It was so hot each day that the trips to the beach were a very welcome reprieve. The walk back through the woods would have been wonderful had it not been so hot and the mosquito been so bad. The area had received a lot of rain within the couple of weeks before the time that we arrived and that made it all the worse.

Instructors for game group listening to instructions
The conditions (heat, humidity, and bugs) were so bad, that the staff treated everyone to an evening of games the second night there. Here the first group is getting instructed on the rules for the game that we would be playing. The staff was very nice and helpful at all times.

Playing the game Staff bringing a ballon
Here the kids were working up a real sweat, but enjoying themselves just the same. After enjoying themselves there, it was soon time to cool off. As you can see, they had a little help.

Ballon Toss 1 Ballon Toss 2
The object of this was to toss the balloon from one net, to the neighboring net. Unfortunately? they usually did not make it. The kids did not seem to complain to much however.

Slip & Slide 1 Slip & Slide 2
They also had a slip and slide set up. This was the one that the kids seemed to enjoy the most. It was real fun just watching.

Archery trail Archery trail 2
The kids learned the proper way to shoot a bow and arrow both on trails, and ...
archery range
on a range.

bb gun range 1 bb gun range 2
They also had range training using BB guns. This was a very structured lesson, but the kids had loads of fun anyway.

Geology trail Geology field area Geology class
In addition to all the "fun" things there was a lot of learning. Here we were learning about Geology and rocks. We had both classroom type information and hikes to find rocks.

confidence trail Adventure trail
We also had a lot of activities that tried to get the kids to work together as a group. Here are two of them. The confidence trail was a lot of activities that could not be completed without all the kids working together. On the Adventure trail the decisions on what to do next had to be made as a group.

camp crafts camp before crafts
We also had a camping crafts class and then applied it to our camp area. Above is the camp before that class,
Below after the class.
camp after crafts

Each night our group would gather and have a nightly campfire with roasted marshmallows and smores.

racoons 1 racoons 2
The highlight of the evenings for the kids was the nightly visitors. Although they did travel back and forth through our campsite, they did not find any food left out there. The campsite next to us was a different story however. Here the racoons gathered for a feast. At one point there were 6 racoons in the camp at one time.

Staff entertainment at closing show On the last day, the camp staff entertained us with a meal (bean and hot dog feast) and a talent show. Here the staff is singing a song. The kids also participated with each site providing a skit for everyone to enjoy.

Getting ready for flag ceremony Flag lowering The sites were inspected daily and participation in activities were taken into account. After each day we were given a score for that day. The top site (score wise) for the campout was awarded the privilege of doing the flag ceremony at the closing dinner. Our site and one other tied for best (perfect scores every day) and we both participated in the flag lowering.

Our group in front of the Tents
Here is a picture of the kids in front of the tent area. Over all this was a very fun trip. I wouldn't want to do it every week, but I sure had fun!
