Just before Christmas 98 we heard of Vanguard Airlines having a fare sale to all their locations and since they fly to Myrtle Beach in South Carolina it interested us. Unfortunately they were already sold out for the cheap fares, but then we found an outstanding fare on Northwest Airlines. We managed to get a round trip fare to Atlanta Georgia for only $88 each for Valentine's Weekend of 1999. This also happened to be Washington's Birthday so we had a three day weekend.
The start of the trip really turned into a fiasco, however. We were scheduled to leave on a flight in the early afternoon. When the aircraft arrived from a previous flight they informed us that a mechanic had to look at the aircraft because of a problem. After 30 min to an hour we were informed that the aircraft would not be able to leave because part of the aircraft had somehow become magnetized and the compass was not reading correctly. They would try to arrange another aircraft for the flight. After waiting another 30 minutes they announced that the flight was officially cancelled and other flight arrangements would have to be made.
I waited in line and when I finally got to the front I was in the process of making new flight plans (thru a connection in Nashville that would take much longer to get there) when they announced that they would be bringing a smaller aircraft in to take over the flight. It would not however be able to handle everyone. I talked to the ticketing agent and she suggested that we book on the flight thru Nashville and she would hold the spot on the original flight. After another 30 minutes or so they confirmed the replacement flight and told everyone that they still may not be able to confirm everyone on the flight. I checked and found out that we were not even listed as being on the flight anymore.
After talking to the ticketing agent again we managed to get on the top of the standby list for the original flight. Since the replacement for the original flight was still scheduled to leave before the new flight I booked on we waited. We fortunately did manage to get on the replacement for the original flight and got into Atlanta only about 2 and a half hours late. We picked up our car and drove to the motel we had made arrangements for in Savannah.
