96' California Vacation

May 7th

A short drive from Las Vegas is the Colorado River and the Hover Dam. The size of this is just immense To think that it was constructed within 4 years (2 years before scheduled!!!) is amazing. You can just feel the power behind the dam as the hugh Lake Mead tries to push through.

I toured the inside of the dam and the generating plant. There are nearly 2 dozen hugh generators located at the base of the dam supplying the area with a good portion of its power. The interesting thing to note is that Las Vegas gets hardly a drop of this power. When the dam was first conceived, apportioned and built, Las Vegas was hardly a collection of buildings. All the power was assigned to the large cities nearby (In California, Nevada and Arizona mainly).

Afterwards it was a long drive over to the Grand Canyon South Rim station. I arrived late in the afternoon and walked a portion of the South Rim viewing all the immense grandeur and then stayed and watched a beautiful sunset over the canyon. This was the most moving thing I have seen. If you are anywhere in the area go visit. You won't be disappointed. Even these pictures which don't really do it justice invoke amazing feelings in me as I see them.
