THOMAS COULSON was born in Derbyshire, England. There are discrepancies among the various sources for his date of birth and his date of death. Irene Coulson Johnston who did extensive research which included a visit to Derbyshire and a review of the parish registers there, listed the date of birth as "about 1630." Other sources recite dates as far up to 1650. One source gives the date of birth as December 9, 1626, in Hartshorne, Derbyshire, England. As for his date of death, sources vary from "about 1710" to "22 November 1686." Johnston advised that he died in 1681 and was buried on November 2, 1681, in Hartshorne.
THOMAS COULSON is referred to as a gentleman in his will and as a captain on the gravestone of his son, Joseph, in America. He is reported to have been a captain of a ship plying between English and Oriental ports. Virginia state records list a Thomas Coulson as "Master of Ship: Robert and Ann" in 1671 (SR03593a. p.10). However, it is not known if this is the same Thomas Coulson. There was also a Coulson family in Bristol, England, at the time who were known to be in shipping.
On November 13, 1655, THOMAS COULSON and ANN BORROW were married at St. Werburgh's. Ann was the daughter of HUMPHREY BORROW and MARY ROBY. She was born January 1, 1633/34, and was christened January 6, 1633/34. Linda Dudick at "www.ancestory.com" traces ANNE BORROW's ancestors back to CHARLEMAGNE, King of France and the first Holy Roman Emperor (Anne was the 34th generation with Charlemagne as the 1st).
THOMAS COULSON and ANN BORROW were the parents of the following children:
