JOSEPH COPPOCK

JOSEPH COPPOCK was born February 24, 1742. His place of birth is recited as West Nottingham, Cecil County, Maryland, Little Britain, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and as Chester County, Pennsylvania. He died in 1801, at the approximate age of fifty-nine. He married on May 4, 1769, at Little Britain Monthly Meeting, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, to JANE WILSON (daughter of JOHN WILSON and RUTH UNKNOWN), who was born September 29, 1751, and died September 10, 1823, shortly before her seventy-second birthday, at Union Monthly Meeting, Miami County, Ohio.

JOSEPH COPPOCK and JANE WILSON were the parents of the following children:

This recitation gives a clear picture of some of the migration patterns of the Quakers at this time. Joseph Coppock and Jane Wilson resided in the first years of their marriage in the Chester County, Pennsylvania, area where their sons John and Thomas were born, at least until 1771 when Thomas was born. The birthplace of their third son, Benjamin, is unknown at this time. Children 6 through 8, Joseph, Elizabeth, William, Margaret, and Jane, were all born at Bush River Monthly Meeting, Newberry County, South Carolina. The birthplace of Samuel, the 9th child, is unknown. However, it is assumed to be Bush River Monthly Meeting because that is the birthplace of William C., the 10th child. The birthplace of Jesse Coppock, the 11th and last child, is also unknown.

At some point there was a migration to the Quaker colony at Miami County, Ohio, although it is not known when the migration took place. Joseph Coppock, the patriarch of the family, died in 1801 but we do not have the location of his death. William C. Coppock died in Ohio in 1813, just four years after his marriage. Joseph (Jr.) died in South Carolina in 1819, although it is unknown whether or not his mother had remained in that area prior to that time. She did move to Ohio at some point because she died there in 1823. At least William C., John, Thomas, Elizabeth, Margaret, Jane, William C. and Jesse, and possibly Benjamin, are the children who are known to have moved there.
