    THOMAS COULSON

THOMAS COULSON was born prior to 1756. He married on November 1, 1778, to ANN STUMP.

THOMAS COULSON and ANN STUMP were the parents of the following child:

NOTE: David Coulson is an as yet unsolved family mystery. He is reported to have been born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, the son of Thomas Coulson. Thomas died young "of a nosebleed" when his son David was two. It has not been clearly shown exactly which Thomas Coulson was David's father. The marriage records in Cecil County, Maryland, list the marriage of "Thomas Coulson, Jr." and Ann Stump. During that period, the designations "Sr." and "Jr." did not have the same significance that they do today. Rather than signifying father and son, they indicated "elder" and "younger" persons of the same name. In 1778, the two adult Thomas Coulson's in the area were Thomas, son of Thomas Coulson and Martha Wiley, who never married and did not die young, and this particular Thomas, son of Joseph Coulson and Mary Allen. In addition, Linda Heilander reports that she has notes that show clearly that David was the son of Thomas Coulson and Ann Stump. However, she does not recall the source from which she took those notes and is presently trying to locate more information. In addition, there were other Coulson lines in the area at the time. However, David is referred to in other family documents and clearly belongs to our line.

    SEVENTH GENERATION

DESCENDANTS OF THOMAS COULSON AND MARTHA WILEY
LINE OF JOSEPH COULSON AND MARY ALLEN

    JOSEPH COULSON

JOSEPH COULSON was born in April of 1756 and died November 2, 1813, at the age of fifty-seven. The records of the Daughters of the American Revolution indicate he was born in 1750 at Stoughton, Massachusetts, and died in 1835 in Havre de Grace, Harford County, Maryland. This would initially indicate that perhaps the Joseph Coulson listed in the records of the DAR is a different Joseph Coulson than this one. However, they indicate that his parents were Joseph Coulson and Mary Allen.

He served in the American Revolution at the Battle of Yorktown, having joined at the age of nineteen and been disowned from membership in the Society of Friends for doing so. He married in 1780 in Harford County, Maryland, to ANN CLARK

JOSEPH COULSON and ANN CLARK were the parents of the following children:

Henry J. Coulson published several accounts of Coulsons reporting that three or four Coulson brothers emigrated from England. Most of these accounts have not been tied into this line. However, he published the following recital written by T. R. Coulson of Trinidad, Colorado, which includes a story of four brothers emigrating from England but which are clearly the members of this family:

    Trinidad, Colo., Aug. 2, 1898

I give you what information I know as being handed down to me. There were four brothers came over from England and settled in the east. Three of these brothers were in the Revolutionary War. Joseph, Jesse, and William the other brother, Nathaniel was then a tory and left to go to Jamaica. My father was the son of William one of the brothers mentioned above.

He (my father) was born between 1780 and 1787 in Westmoreland county Pa. He married Lydia Rogers, both Quakers. Had a family of 12 children, all now deceased except three:- T. R. Coulson Trinidad, Colo.; Mrs. Susan Lewis, Rushill, Ohio; and Mrs. Lydia Paterson, Nevada, Ohio. My father left Pa., at an early date and moved to Southern Ohio. My father's sister married John Davenport, and moved to Barnesville, Ohio.

    T. R. Coulson states that his father was born between 1780 and 1787. Our William who married Lydia Rogers was born in 1785. It is known that Joseph Coulson (son of Joseph who married Mary Allen) fought in the Revolution. His brothers mentioned above include Thomas, Nathaniel, Jesse and Ezra, but there is no mention of a William. T. R. Coulson's father William was the son this particular Joseph Coulson. It is known that William married Lydia Rogers and that his sister Martha married John Davenport.

The Will of Joseph Coulson, recorded in Cecil County, Maryland, reads as follows:

Henry J. Coulson published the following letter, written by Van Buren Coulson, son of Silas Coulson (third child, above) who was Station Agent, Justice of the Peace and Post Master at Coulson, Mercer County, Pennsylvania:

My grandfather, Thomas A. Coulson, came from Washington County to Mercer County, Pennsylvania. He married to Fanny Maxwell of Irish descent. I have heard them often speak of my uncles Jabez, Jehu and others, they bought three farms joining. I have been over the farms often. Father got the old farm, it is in Coolspring Township. Fifty years ago it was divided into four townships. One quarter retains the old name from having so many good springs of cool crystal water. Grandfather, Grandmother, Maxwell, Mary and Fanny are buried in the old Coolspring Cemetery. My father, mother, brother and one sister are buried in the new Coolspring cemetery about two miles from the old homestead, the old one is about four miles distant. Esther and Eliza are buried about eight miles distant. Uriah and John in Michigan, Ulysses in Illinois, Allen in Kansas, George in Council Bluffs, Iowa, his grave was washed away during high water.

Fanny Maxwell was reported to be the sole survivor of a shipwreck in her journey from Ireland. Her granddaughter, "E.W.B." related the following story to Henry J. Coulson:

I understood that my grandmother came from Ireland. The ship was wrecked and she was washed ashore, the rest were all lost. She was taken by a nice family to raise. Uncle Jesse Fell, Esther's husband, said grandmother was the most handsome and best woman he ever saw.
