The following article regarding John Coulson Hindman, Sr., appeared in the Oxford Press, Oxford, Pennsylvania, on March 29, 1900.

John Coulson Hindman, whose name is known in almost every home in upper Cecil County; also widely known in the adjoining counties of Chester and Lancaster. Today he is in the zenith of his chosen avocation and is holding his own against all comers. He is a native of the Sixth District, Cecil County, Maryland, and was born near Nottingham Presbyterian Church, on October 28, 1845. In October, 1867, Mr. Hindman called his first sale, it being that of Mrs. William C. Krauss, who then lived near the road leading from Harrisville to West Nottingham. Mrs. Ellen M. Tosh owns the property now. We presume Mr. Hindman felt something like the boy about to speak a "piece" but he got through all right. One of the articles he sold was a bedstead, William M. Cameron buying it for $5. Mr. Hindman is methodical and has a record of those for whom he called sales from October, 1867, to March 28, 1900. During that time he has called about 2400 sales, an average of 75 sales a year. His best year was in 1893, when he called 117 sales. He always called his own sales, never having anyone to assist him. He gives satisfaction, has good judgment and is withal a jovial fellow amid a crowd of spectators. His powers of endurance are excellent and he looks forward to continue in the business for years to come. In appearance he somewhat resembles ex-President Cleveland. Mr. Hindman's strong points in auctioneering are knowing the value of property and understanding human nature. We understand that he is not a mind reader, but when a person confronts him and commences to bid, Mr. Hindman claims he can read his thoughts the same as a book. He also claims he can almost tell what property will bring as soon as the sale begins and seldom finds himself mistaken. Mr. H. is a Gorman Democrat first, last and all the time. During the past ten years Mr. Hindman was postmaster at Rising Sun and filled the office A1, being the first presidential P.M. at that place. His parents were Hirman and Rachel Hindman. His address is Rising Sun, Maryland.

The following notice appeared in the Midland Journal (Rising Sun, Maryland) on January 20, 1899:

Wm. T. Coulson has been appointed postmaster at Port Deposit, as recommended by Congressman Wm. B. Baker.

William Thomas Coulson was also a storekeeper in Port Deposit. Ben Foster provided the following from the Commercial and Industrial Review of Northern and Western Maryland (about 1896):

Coulson & Co., General Merchandise. ...Messrs Coulson & Co. ...by the virtue of good quality of goods have ingratiated themselves into the good will of a permanent patronage. They occupy a salesroom 22 x 40 feet in dimensions, suitably arranged for teh conduct of the trade centered here and carry a line of staple and fancy groceries and provisions, canned and bottled goods, dress goods, underwear, hosiery, notions, flannels, laces, ribbons, shawls, hats and caps, boots and shoes, rubber goods, household articles, cutlery, hardware, etc. The cellar is utilized for storing duplicate stock, and to successfully prosecute this business, three qualified assistants are required, leaving nothing undone that will in any way cater to the interests of the patron. The individual members comprising this energetic firm are W.T. and Jno. E. Coulson, both natives of Port Deposit. The former is a member of the K.G.E. and the Jr. O.U.A.M., and also sustains the responsible position of town commissioner; the latter is identified with the K.G.E., and as business men and citizens have proven themselves in every respect worthy of the esteem in which they are held.

The firm was known as W. T. Coulson & Co., General Merchandise in 1880. In 1887 it was known as Coulson & Co., General Merchandise. Ben Foster hasin his possession some sale records of the store. He also advises that he is not sure if this is also the firm referred to in 1896-97 as "H. R. Coulson, General Store," in Port Deposit.
