Henry J. Coulson published the following obituary but does not give the name of the newspaper in which it appeared:
Capt. Coulson died at his home Sunday morning at 5:30 o'clock, of pneumonia, aged 68 years. His death is the third in a family of brothers within the past four months, and the fourth and sole surviving brother is lying at the point of death at Braeburn, Pa. Capt. Martin Coulson and his brothers, Sanford B., John and William, were the proprietors of the famous Coulson line of packet and freight steamers that ran from Pittsburg down the Ohio and up the Mississippi and Missouri. This line went out of business 15 years ago. Four months ago Commodore S. B. Coulson died at Yankton. One week ago Captain John Coulson followed his brother to the grave, and the death of Martin occurred yesterday, but a few hours after the receipt of the intelligence that William was at the point of death.
Although Capt. Coulson has been identified with the history of Washington County for but a short time, he had taken a place among the most prominent and valuable citizens of the community.
He was born October 6, 1830, on a farm on the National Road, situated about one mile east of Brownsville, Fayette County, Pa., and there learned the blacksmith's trade of his father. At the age of 18, he left home and took a position on a steamboat, Tom Scriber, which plied between Pittsburg and West Newton; later engaging with his brother in the steamboat trade on the Ohio, Mississippi and Missouri Rivers.
On March 4th, 1857, deceased married Violet G., daughter of Capt. Joseph Sheplar, of Westmoreland Co., Pa. After marriage Mr. and Mrs. Coulson resided in Allegheny, where the moved in the highest social circles. In 1888 he purchased his present farm, now known as the Keystone Stock Farm, from Robert Van Voorhis, and moved upon it, adding many improvements, erecting all the buildings which are fitted with all modern conveniences, giving ample evidence of the progressive spirit characterizing the owner.
In politics Mr. Coulson voted with the Democratic party, and took an active interest in all public enterprises. The Capt. was a kind husband, a loving and indulgent father, whose absence in the family circle will be deeply felt. He leaves a wife and 3 children, Joseph, Mrs. Margaret Adams and Alfred.
Henry J. Coulson also reprinted the following obituary:
Monongahela, Pa., January 17, 1898. Capt. Martin Coulson, aged 68 years, died yesterday. He was a native of Fayette county, but for 35 years lived in Allegheny, & for 30 years was a steamboatman on the Mississippi, Missiouri & Ohio rivers. Since 1888 he had conducted livestock farm near here. He was a member of the Methodist church. His wife & three children survive.
