GEN: Thanks to the enterprise of the partners of the Cornish Copper Company and their rivals, John Harvey and his son henry, the
GEN: port of Hayle which they developed became one of the busiest in Cornwall during most of the 19th century. In addition to the

GEN: large quantities of tin, copper ore, machinery from the factories of the Cornish Copper Company and Harvey and Company as well
GEN: as flour and china clay were despatched from the port. There was also a thriving passenger service to and from Bristol until
GEN: the railway replaced it.
GEN: The Cornish Copper Company, Harvey and Company and others, including the Bains of Portreath took part in this trade with their
GEN: own ships commanded mainly by masters born in Hayle and its neighborhood. Most of the ships were engaged in the coastal trade
GEN: particularly between Hayle and south Wales and in between. The also sailed to the Americas, South Africa, and the
GEN: Mediterranean as well as the ports of Northern Europe.
GEN: The most prominent seafarers in Hayle were the Sprays of whom details follow. Members of the family were captains, part ship
GEN: owners, and involved in the maritime affairs generally. The Sprays were consistently masters of the Cornish Copper company's
GEN: ships until that company ceased trading in 1868 when Harvey and Company became the sole owners of the port. Some of the
GEN: Sprays worked for the Bains of Portreath, whose ships traded from Hayle, when the Cornish Copper company's ships sold.
