I have also started to compile some local links for persons interested in
Doing their research here in Canada, and more specifically Saskatchewan.
If you have more that you would like to add please email me

WHAT MATTERS
One hundred years from now, it will not matter what kind of car I drove, what kind of house I lived in, how much I had in my bank account, now what my clothes looked like. But the world may be a little better because I was important in the life of a child.

GENEALOGY RESEARCH INFORMATION
This is some information from the Armchair Genealogist,Saskatoon Branch Newsletter, about basic name patterns in Norway.
  1. Naming for grandparents:
    • Eldest son-paternal grandfather
    • Eldest daughter-paternal grandmother
    • Second son-Maternal grandfather
    • Second daugher-Maternal grandmother
Exception: When a man married the heiress to a farm, the rule is her parent's names should be used first.
  • Naming for Great Grandparents:
When naming of the grandparents were exhausted, the names of great-grandparents were used. There were no rules as to which should be used first.
  • Naming for deceased spouse:
    1. A Widower's first daughter in a second marriage was named for the first wife.
    2. A widow's first son in a second marriage was named for the first husband
Note: If one had two previous spouses their names were taken in chronological order. In the 1800's, it became customary to give double first names, naming both spouses.
  • Naming of an illegitimate child:
    1. Thc child, if a boy, was named for the father to 'punish' him. Combinations: i.e. Knut KNUTSEN accepted. If a court judgement cleared the man of the charge, the child became 'fatherless' and only used matronymic: i.e. Lars Laugson.
    2. If a girl was born, the father cleared, she was named for her mother and used a matronymic: i.e. Karrie Karriedatter.
    3. Illegitimate person's children were not named for parental grandparents.
  • some exceptions to the general rules:
    1. Children were sometimes named for childless kinfolk who gave the parents a gift of property, etc. The children would be named for this farm.
    2. A child could be named for someone who in an earlier generation hadn't had a namesake.
    3. continuing of naming for the same person if the children died in infancy
  • General:
    1. As early as the 1800's, double forenames were recorded occasionally.
    2. Several children in the same family have the same name: i.e. if both grandfathers and great grandfathers had the name Johan, then four sons, in the same family could be called Johan.
    3. When a man married the heiress to a farm he took the "farm name" as his surname
  • Some information from Grassroots Branch SGS Newsletter, January 1987
  • I looked back and saw my father and his father and all our fathers, and in front to see my son and his son, and the sons upon sons beyond.... As I felt so they had felt and were to feel, as then, so now, as tomorrow and forever. Then I was not afraid, for I was in a long line that had no beginning and no end. Richard Llewellyn

    Censeii
To calculate the birth. When looking at censeii to
find the age of the person at the time of the census
it is often necessary to know when the census was taken.
    Often two questions remain
    1) Had the person already had a birthday that year?
    2) And if birthday known when was the census?
    1841 June 6
    1851 March 30
    1861 April 7
    1871 April 2
    1881 April 3
    1891 April 5
