During a period of the Great War of Northern Aggression , while
her husband was out in the local caves hiding from Confederate
authorities, a bear broke into the pen area and ate the family
sow, which they had been counting on for winter meat. Rachel
picked up their old shotgun and went out after that bear.
That winter, they ate bear meat instead of pork.
