George O. Ray. A lawyer of more than average ability, George
DO. Ray (christened George Amos Ostie), of Springfield,
Missouri, was born at Nockview, NC. He is the second son of
Joseph Lafayette and Loretta Cole Ray, both natives of that
state, he came west with his father in 1901, while yet in his
early teens, his mother having died some years prior to that
time. His father was a member of the Fifth Ohio Cavalry, of the
Union Army. A brother served as Captain in the Confederate
forces of North Carolina during the same time.... In Carter
County, Missouri in 1915 Mr. Ray married Miss Laura E. Bray, a
lineal descendant of James A. Garfield. The Ray home is located
at the northwest corner of North Broadway and Florida Streets,
where the family has resided for eight years. The venerable
Father, age eighty eight years, resides at 1939 North robberson
Avenue where he recounts his life's varied experiences in three
professions-- Soldier, Educator -preacher and lawyer. His own
education an excellent one, it is largely to high example and
noble purposes of his life that the Mr. Ray of this review
gives much of the credit for his own careful training and for
the measure of success he has thus far obtained in life.

[225]
Sarah HILLIARD was apparently married 3 times, first to
Bartholomew SELDEN, second to William EDWARDS and later to a
CANTRELL, probably Joseph CANTRELL. Her will filed 4 November,
1783 in Bedford County, VA., indicates she had a son, Stephen
CANTRELL, and daughters Sarah (CHEETWOOD) and Delilah
(NOWLAND). She was also the mother of Capt. John EDWARDS and
Mary EDWARDS.
From 'Annals of Southwest Virginia 1769-1800' by Lewis P.
SUMMERS - 1929, Court - 16 Apr 1783at Washington Co VA,
(p.1138) - Aaron LEWIS against Sarah CANTRILL, in a suit in
Chancery, a Dedimus to take deposition is granted. Court - 2
May 1783 Washington Co VA, (p.1149-1150), Joel CHITWOOD proves
three days attendance as a witness in the suit, Sarah CANTRILL
against Aaron'LEWIS and traveling 180 miles. Also Stephen
CANTRILL proves three days attendance in the same suit.
CANTRILL vs LEWIS, Order of Dedimus. Court - 20 May 1784
Washington Co VA (p.1181) Ordered that the Clerk agreeable to
the Decree of November Court 1783 in the suit Aaron LEWIS
against Sarah CANTRILL, deliver the Bonds of Aaron LEWIS to
Sarah CANTRILL unto the said LEWIS. Washington County TN (???)
Deeds, Vol. 3, page 209, dated 5 May 1784... Aaron LEWIS to
Sarah CANTRELL (He of Washington Co VA and she of Bedford Co
VA, for 90 pounds - 140 Acres on South Fork of Cherokee Creek.
NOTE: Aaron LEWIS was the Judge of the Court...
In September 1994, I determined that Sarah CANTRELL's maiden
name was Sarah HILLIARD. According to the College of William &
Mary's publications, 'The William & Mary Quarterly', Series 1
-Volume 5, page 264, it is stated, 'Bartholomew SELDEN, d.
1727, son of Samuel, m. (1) Anchilly ANCHILLY, d. 1722,
daughter ofJoseph ANCHILLY (d. 1700). Proven by Chancery Suit
in Lancaster County, VA. He md. (2) Sarah HILLIARD. She md.
(2), William EDWARDS.' In Series 1, Volume 5, page 61, of the
W&M Quarterly, it states, 'William EDWARDS, m. before 1740,
Sarah HILLIARD SELDEN, widow of Bartholomew.' Another statement
on p. 264 regarding Bartholomew's first wife says, 'Achilly
died without issue in 1722. Bartholomew then md. Sarah
HILLIARD, who survived him, md. Wm EDWARDS, and d. in 1777. In
Series 1, Volume 9, page 105 and 106 concerns the Last Will
andTestament of Bartholomew SELDEN and refers to both his 2nd
wife, Sarah HILLIARD SELDEN and William EDWARDS. I have a copy
of these pages on file. from Clinton Edwards
