The present stupa rising
to heavens; perched atop a massive rock, was built by King Kakavannatissa
who reigned in the Kingdom of Ruhuna second century BC.
Scattered in this silvian paradise are caves which were the abodes of meditating
monks; who were forced to leave the splendid city of Anuradhapura by the
virulent drought that left the north central kingdom a deserted terrain.
There is ample evidence on archiological artifacts scattered about the place, that a unique culture thrived and developed around this monastery boasting of new additions to "hela" alphabet,The language of descendants of "Helis" or "hela" who are known as Sinhalese in the present day.
It is of great interest to note that while Pharose were building Pyramids in Egypt; Sinhalese kings yet another group of descendents of "helis" were building Collossal dagobas or Stupas in SriLanka; which stand as majestic as they were even today.
The Monastery itself is located about 10Km away from the Yala National Wildlife Sanctuary, Km from Tissamaharamaya another historic Town with Tanks Reservoirs and Stupas.
A visitor to this site
even today cannot fail to notice the serene atmosphere prevailing in the
surrounds unifying the mind to a tranquil Samadhi; with little effort.
