Cockroft of England and Virginia
The Cockroft and Mosely families who were in Princess Ann and Lower
Norfolk counties Virginia in the 1600s have descendants who
eventually made their way to 96 District, Edgefield county, South
Carolina. They resided in the same general vicinity as Ogden
Cockeroft who received a land grant there in 1775. While no direct
connection has been established between these two Cockroft lines, I
believe it does exist. Jehu Cocroft's will was proved January 5,
1703/04 in Princess Ann County, Virginia and another Jehu Cockroft
died there in 1728. Yet another Jehu Cockroft lived in the same area
of South Carolina as did Ogden.
The Edgefield county Moseleys originated in Charlotte county, Virginia
and were descendants of William and Susannah Burnett Moseley of Princess
Ann county, Virginia. Susannah's sister was Elizabeth, wife of William
Cockroft. The Moseleys, and , undoubtedly, the Cockrofts, emigrated to
Virginia around 1649 from Rotterdam, Holland where they had fled Oliver
Cromwell and his vicious "Roundheads". William Moseley's will was signed
29 June 1655 and proved 15 August 1655 in Virginia naming wife, Susan
Moseley; two sons, William Moseley, Jr. and Arthur Moseley; grandchild,
... Coker; cousin, William Cockroft; witnesses, John Carroway and Abraham
Thomas of Norfolk, Virginia.
This certainly does not prove anything; however, it does give rise to
speculations which should, at least, be considered.
The connection between the two families apparently occurs in England
rather than America. The Virginia Cockrofts are descended from William
Cockroft, born 1605 in England, and Elizabeth Burnett, his wife. If
Caleb Cockroft, born in Heptonstall, England, is William's brother and
if our Ogden Cockroft is the same Ogden born in Heptonstall then this
is where the familial connection occurs between these two families.
Until Ogden's birthplace and parentage are ascertained beyond doubt
the possibility exists that he may be of the Virginia family. To my
knowledge no record of any Ogden Cockroft has been found in Virginia
or South Carolina before 1775 and Ogden's own son unequivocally stated
that his father was born in England thus we conclude that our Ogden was
born in Heptonstall, Yorkshire, England and that he emigrated to America
shortly before 1775.

Caleb Cockroft, "of" London, is buried at St. Stephen?s, Coleman St.
His wife married #2, Oliver St. John, and #3, Sir Humphrey Sydenham of
Chilworthy where she died 01 March 1679/80. Caleb and his wife are
mentioned in her father?s 1641 will but not in her mother?s 1651 will.
Katherine Oxenbridge was a daughter of Thomas Harby and Katherine
Throgmorton. Katherine Throgmorton was daughter of Clement Throgmorton,
son of Sir George and his wife, Katherine Vaux, daughter of Sir Nicholas
Vaux and his wife, the widow Elizabeth Parr.
