6 February 1773 - Royal land grant - Colleton Co., SC, 300 acres, with wife and 3 or 4 children under 16 ( Old Colleton County was quite large. Edgefield was created out of part of this county, and later part of Edgefield was made into Saluda County. Ogden Cockcroft's 1773 grant is now in Saluda Co.) The 300a was situated in Colleton County, on the branches of a small branch of Little Saludy, called Pen creek, bounding all sides on vacant land. (This grant is recorded in Grant Book III, JJJ, or TTT, p.169, Secretary?s Office.) Wm. Bell made the tax returns in Charleston 19 May 1774 for Ogden Cockroft Royal land grants were granted by the lord?s Proprietors from 1670 - 1719. Grants usually contained 70 acres for single men. They were granted by the King from 1719 - 1775 while South Carolina was a Royal Province and contained 100 acres per man for himself, 50 acres for his wife and 50 acres more for each child or dependent under 16 years of age. If daughters were single or widows over 16 years of age they were entitled to 100 acres in their own right. No married woman except widows was entitled to land in her own right. The number of dependents in a man?s household can be determined by the acreage allotted to him; however, care must be used to ascertain the correct allotment for the year of the grant as some years the 100 acre allotment for men and women was only 50 acres. After the American Revolution headright law was abolished and anyone could claim as much free vacant land as he/she could find provided they paid for locating and surveying the land. ( Joan Berry submitted the following to me which is of interest because it locates Ogden?s residence by modern highways: "The Marsh Johnson house is located in the southwest portion of what is now Saluda County--old Edgefield- -at the intersection of Fruithill Road and Rocky Creek Road about 2 miles off highway 121...Who were the families that this home nourished over two centuries? First mention of the porperty comes in 1773 when Ogden Cockroft received this land in a Royal Land Grant of 300 acres. Mr. Cockroft sold 'all that plantation or tract of land...on one of the head branches of Pen Creek water of Little Saluda bounded on all sides by vacant land...' to Bryan Marsh in 1804. (Source: Quill, the official publication of Old Edgefield District Archives Genealogical Society Founded in 1985, Mar-Apr 1997 issue, Vol XIII, No. 2, pg 25: The Marsh Johnson House and Some of its People by Roy Vandegrift III.) ) 03 January 1785 George Bucklue, Planter, to William Green, Planter, both of 96 District, SC, 50a being part of a tract surveyed by William Anderson, D.S. 02 June 1772 and certified 17 June 1772, entered in Auditor Generals office 09 October 1772 and granted 14 ? 1772 to Richard Bucklue being now dead and said George Bucklue, his son, became heir at law; said tract on Little Stephen?s Creek of Savannah River adjacent Ogden Cockeroff, Richard Buckelew, dec?d, now belonging to said George Buckelew, James Bucklue, Garret Bucklue; signed George Buckelew, Mary (X) Buckelew; witnesses: Azariah Lewis, Efphama (+) Buckelew, Ogden Cockeroff, who swore 31 March 1789 before Arthur Simkins, JP; recorded 26 June 1793.
