C. H. KNOOP

 C. H. Knoop, father of John W. and A. A. Knoop, died in February 1903.
He had lied in Morgan county since the early days and was a German citizen of much worth to the whole
county.  In many ways he contributed to the upbuilding and general prosperity of the country.  He owned
much land, was a heavy stock-raiser and dealer, and one of the heaviest taxpayers in the county.  He was
known far and wide for his frugality and the vastness of his business.  He was a stalwart Methodist and was
a stock holder and director in the Bank of Versailles.  Such men are missed when they are gone
 
    JEHRU ROBINSON

The above photograph is a good likeness of Rev. Jehu Robinson, deceased, and his wife, still living.  Uncle
Jehu died in 1904 aged about 84.  He was a Baptist preacher of considerable force and influence.  He was
perhaps the best known Baptist preacher in the country.  He served nearly every Baptist church in Morgan
county and did much good in his day that will last till the
 


judgement day.  Brother Robinson’s grand old body lies buried in the Freedom cemetery, four miles north of
Versailles.  His wife is still living.
 Among the other preachers who have had much to do with building up goo din the county are B.
B. Stone, C. H. Cramer, John Adair, Frank Carpenter and J. Ed Sims.  Rev. Sims was married in June 1907
to Mrs. Smiley.
 

JOHN ADAIR

 Uncle John Adair is 84 years old and was born  in Morgan county   Two years ago he won the
prize in an old settlers’ reunion here for being the oldest natural born citizen on the grounds.  He was born in
Richland between Syracuse and Florence.  He is a Baptist preacher though he has not preached as much as
some men of his age.  He  is a good citizen and not lives two miles south of Versailles.
 
SAMUEL MARTIN

 This is a good picture of Uncle Sam Martin who died in his hotel in Versailles in 1906.  He had
been a hotel keeper here 52 years, having come from North Carolina in the early day.  Uncle Sam was 91
years old at the time of his death and was remarkably strong for a man of his age.  He died quite suddenly.
He was one of the best known hotel keepers in the state.
