First thing I did was to organize my data on my computer. I did this by creating a folder I called Geneology. Into this folder I created my subfolders.
(I also created floppy disks for each of my subfolders in case of system or browser crashes)
- Programs - Into this folder is where I placed my Geneology programs. After trying several demos I descided upon "Brothers Keeper" for my needs. This program I found to be a very powerful programs and is also has easily customizeable reports. Ther are other good programs out there it is up to each individuals preference. Because this program was right for me does not mean that it would be right for you. I have compiled links to several good programs that I have either tried or been told about. You will find them on my Links page.
- In my Programs folder I created a subfolder called "Web Generators" into which I placed my website codeing programs that created this program from my .ged files. You will also find links for these programs in my Links page.
- Then back in my main Geneology folder I created subfolders for each of my data categories that I made using notepad.
Websites - Here I placed a txt file that gave site names, urls, info about what kind of site it was (ie. personal homepage, general information, government agency, etc.) and what information I found there. This I did in case of database loss in my browser.
E-Mail Queries - This folder is just as it's name implies. It is a txt file where I copied and pasted all of my e-mail queries, each in its own txt file.
E-Mail Replies - same thing as above except with the replies I have Gotten to my Queries.
Future Data - Again a txt file of data that has been found or recieved thats has at this time no place to be used, but may be useful later on in my research.
*** NOTE: After all data in the 2 e-mail subfolders and the future data subfolder has been placed or found to be of no significance I then delete it from said folders. This way I keep a steady stream of info flowing without sifting through files I have already completed using. ***
As I Contine updateing this site I will be adding more to this page so please check back often for more tips.
