[NI458] Jonathan Scott is first mentioned in the Waterbury records in Jan 1689/90, when he received a grant of land on the west side of "Union Square." He was to build a house and inhabit for four years. It doesn't appear that he built upon this land. In Dec 1690, he had ten acres granted to him at Wooster Swamp. His name is not amoung the subscribers of the agreement with Mr. Peck, he probably being barely 21 years old. He became a proprietor by purchase of his brother Samuel, 28 Apr 1691. In 1702 and 1709 Jonathan was appointed fence viewer, and again in 1717. At some time between that date and 26 July 1710 he was captured by the Indians and taken to Canada. In October 1710 and again in 1711, the country rates on his estate were remitted to his wife. In October 1712 he was "but lately returned from his captivity." He requested relief from the Court, and received "a release from his country rate, and ten pounds out of the treasury, for the loss of one of his thumbs by the enemy." Soon after 1720 he removed to Wooster Swamp, in the north part of Watertown, near Scott's Mountain, where he built a saw mill, and lived with his sons. He is believed to have been the earliest permanent settler of Watertown.
[NI464] Hannah withstood many perils and hardships. In 1704, her mother and her brother with his wife and their three children were slain at Deerfield, while her only sister was made an Indian captive and perished on the way to Canada. In 1707 or 1708, within a few miles of her home in Waterbury, her husband's brother was tortured to death. In 1710, her husband was seized in the Waterbury meadows, the thumb of his right hand was cut off, and thus mutilated, he was taken on the long and weary march to Canada. It was two full years before she saw him again. During this time she had to brave life in Waterbury raising several young children.
[NI18465] Captured by Indians and never returned.
[NI18467] His father gave him a house and lands at Wooster Swamp in 1731.
