[NI2012] In the early town records of Hartford, Conn., George Gates appears as chimneyviewer (equivalent to fire commissioner). He had a brother Thomas who died without issue. He is probably of the Gates family around Chelmsford, Essex, England. In 1662, along with a dozen or more other young married, purchased 30,000 acres (for about $100) on the Connecticut River, to become Haddam and East Haddam. They all settled along the west side of the river. George was a freeman and Townsman of Haddam, Oct 1669, and Selectman in 1681. About 1670 George and several others moved to the town land on the east side of the river, in what later became East Haddam. In 1688-1689 George was Ensign of the Haddam militia, was appointed Lt. of the Haddam train-band late in 1689, and commissioned Captain of it in 1692. George gave public service to his community for many years. Between 1668-1702 he attended at least 52 sessions of the General Assembly as a Representative for Haddam, from 1690-1698 was Commissioner, in 1698 was Town Clerk, and 1701-1704 was a Justice of the Peace for Hartford County. He died in 1724 at age 90, leaving an estate of nearly 1500 pounds.

[NI1998] He was one of the first Deacons of the First Church in East Haddam, in Millington Society, and was frequently elected to office in the Town.
