INDEX

[NI4818] Johann Wilhelm came to Bendorf in 1688 with Jonas Moelich, from Winningen, a town on the Moselle, four miles west of Coblentz. There is every reason to believe that if not the son, he was at least a nephew of Jonas. There is no record of the death of Johann Wilhelm in Bendorf. He evidently removed from there after the death of his wife in 1729, and is said to have emigrated. No record of him has been found in America; had he been there his youngest son, Gottfried, would hardly have remained until his maturity as the ward of his eldest brother Johannes.

[NI6168] Anna Cathrine's parentage is not known. However, she had a sister living in Winningen, the wife of Johann David Krober, and another sister who was the wife of a Mr. Hermann of Hochstenbach.

[NI4831] Early in 1735, Johannes gathered together his family, his household goods and effects, and his youngest brother, Gottfried (Godfrey), departed Bendorf on a barge on the Rhine River, to Rotterdam. Here they took ship and sailed for America. They arrived in America 29 May 1735 at Philadelphia in ship "Mercury", under Capt. William Wilson. He settled first in Germantown, PA. In 1747 he bought 409 acres in Greenwich Twp, now Warren Co, NJ, fronting on the Delaware River and Pohohatacong Creek. He bought 400 acres near Whitehouse in 1750, and bought 367 acres near Pluckamin, NJ in 1751. On 28 Nov 1758 Johannes conveyed to his brother Godfrey 181 acres of his original 409 acre purchase. He appears he never lived on his portion of the land on the Delaware River. On his death it became the homestead of his second son, Andrew. In 1750 Johannes was living in Readington township, Hunterdon county, where he was interested in a tannery with Johann Jacob Klein, his son-in-law. He was active in the Zion Lutheran church at New Germantown.

[NI4833] Peter emigrated to America, landing at Philadelphia on 24 Aug 1728, from the ship "Nortonhouse," John Coultas, master, from Rotterdam. He probably remained in Pennsylvania, probably at Germantown. He was not living in 1755, as the marriage of his daughter, Maria Catharina, in that year, describes her as "the daughter of the late John Peter Melick." His children settling in Hunterdon Co, NJ.

[NI4581] Having left Bendorf, Germany, Godfrey arrived at Philadelphia 29 May 1735 in the ship "Mercury" with his older brother Johannes. They initially settled at Germantown, PA. In Dec 1747 Johannes purchased 409 acres of land in Greenwich Township, Sussex (now Warren) Co, New Jersey, on which Godfrey also settled. On 28 Nov 1758 Johannes conveyed 181 acres of this land to his brother Godfrey. The deed stated that Godfrey was in actual possession of the land, and was a prime purchaser, and was to have been a party in the grant, and for that purpose paid 149 pounds. Johannes apparently acted as guardian for his younger brother, having brought funds with him to America to insure his proper settlement when of age. Godfrey increased his possessions that same year by purchasing 150 acres of land from William Lovet Smith.
