Francis was a carpenter by trade. Francis and Lavina bought forty acres of land which joined Lavina's father's eighty acres in Putman Township a short distance southeast of Cuba. This land has now been stripped of coal and all old landmarks are gone. It was on this farm that their second son, Silas Jasper, was born May 18, 1868. Lavina told her grandchildren that when her son, Jasper, was just big enough to walk, he toddled down to the spring where they got their water and fell in. He probably would have drowned had it not been for his older brother who was then five. In 1869, Francis took typhoid fever and was ill only a few days when he died October 12th, leaving Lavina with two preschool age sons. He was buried in the Saunders Cemetery in Putman Township, Fulton County, Illinois.
