In contrast to the other Rancks who served in local militias and perhaps saw no military action, according to DAR records, Samuel was a Private and a Corporal in the 1st Battalion of the Flying Camp organized in Pennsylvania in 1776 and commanded by Colonel James Cunningham. On August 27, 1776, he participated in the Battle of Long Island. One DAR record says he crossed the Delaware with General Washington and was one of the victors of the Battle of Trenton, but no source documentation was given. He also served under Capt. Alexander McIlvain in the 5th Battalion of the Lancaster county Militia.
