[NI17204] Thomas Bull sailed from Sandwich, England, on the "Hopewell" on 11 Sep 1635. He remained at Boston or Cambridge until the following spring; accompanied Rev. Hooker to Hartford in 1636. He was an original proprietor of Hartford, CT. He received lot 32 in the Hartford grant, on the south side of Little River and on the south side of old Buckingham Street, between Main and Bliss. He served under Capt. John Mason in the Pequot War, 1637. He became familiar with the Indian habits and language, and was therefore peculiarly useful to the early settlers. He was master of a vessel at Curacoa, 1647-8. Juror at Hartford, 1648-9. Winthrop calls him "a godly and discreet man." He received, with others, grants of land from the General Court, at Nihantecutt, in 1650, and in March 1651/52 the Court granted to him, and the rest of the five soldiers of Capt. Mason, 200 acres of upland, which lay northward, and adjoining to the remainder of the land before laid out to them. He was appointed Lt. of a company raised in 1653, by order of the Commissioners of the United Colonies, to fight the Dutch. In May, 1662, he was appointed one of the Grand Jurors of the colony; chosen List and Rate Maker, 1668; Townsman, 1663. He was in command of the fort at Saybrook when Sir Edmund Andros attempted to gain the place for his master, the Duke of York, in 1675. The bravery and wisdom which he displayed in his resistance to Andros greatly endeared Capt. Bull to the people of the colony as a gallant and intrepid officer. He and his wife, Susanna, were original members of the South Church, 12 Feb 1670. Thomas' will was dated 19 Apr 1684, inventory 24 Oct 1684.
[NI18974] Deacon of Farmington, CT, Church. He was a blacksmith, gunsmith, and farmer. He held many offices in Farmington -- deacon, town clerk, collector, assessor, deputy at seven sessions. He was on the committee of appraisals in May 1701, lieutenant of the Trainband in Oct 1691. He was the principal armorer of the village. Will dated 7 May 1708 mentions wife Mary, grandchildren Thomas, Nehemiah and John (sons of his eldest son John, deceased), daughter Susannah Porter, son Samuel, son Jonathan, son David, and daughter Sarah.
[NI18977] Fought in the French and Indian wars. He was also engaged in trade, owning a number of vessels. In 1686 he was ensign of the Hartford Trainband. He was named Lieutenant of the South Hartford Trainband in 1689, and Capt. of the Hartford Trainband in 1690. He served in King William's War, taking a company to Albany and Schenectady in 1689. In 1695 he served as Sgt. Major of Hartford Co and as deputy for Hartford in 1697/8. He and his wife were admitted to the South Church 3 Feb 1694/95. Jonathan had a son, Dr. Jonathan, one of the first highly educated physicians in Hartford. His son, Judge Jonathan, was a distinguished lawyer, and held many responsible offices. Estate inventory taken 4 Sep 1702, and amounted to £1344. It included half interest in two sloops and 100 acres at Cedar Swamp -- land his father had received from the state.
[NI18979] In 1686 David Bull was Constable of Saybrook, CT.
[NI18981] Joseph Bull was sworn as a freeman at Hartford in 1667. In 1669 he owned a sawmill with partner John Bidwell Jr at Pitkins Falls, near Wethersfield. He owned the covenant at 2nd Church of Hartford on 22 Feb 1670. On 6 Oct 1672 Joseph Bull and wife Sarah were received at 2nd Church from Cambridge, MA, and their first child Sarah was baptized on that day. He was later a deacon of the church. Joseph Bull was a sea captain and trader. In 1684 he was named as executor of his father's will. Wethersfield records indicate that Joseph Bull had a lot on Rocky Hill in 1709, next to that of Thomas Bunce. Joseph Bull's will was administered by his widow Hannah and son Caleb. Inventory was taken on 18 Apr 1712, listing an estate of £890.
[NI18985] Died of smallpox.
