Valentine and Elizabeth made their home in Stewartsville, NJ, for many years, and later moved to Phillipsburg, NJ. He was a merchant at Easton, PA.

Augustus was a student in the Stewartsville Academy and later studies dentistry under Dr. Fine. He became an expert in mechanical dentistry, and for many years was connected with the office of Dr. T. F. King of Easton, PA. Augustus later had his own office in Easton, PA, and one at Branchville, NJ. On 20 April 1861, he enlisted in Col. Samuel Zoho's First PA Vol. Inf., and served as Corporal in Co. D, under Capt. Charles H. Heckman. Co. D was on duty at Camp Scott, near York, PA, and later guarded the Northern Central Railroad. The company was sent to Catonsville, Franklintown and Chambersburg. From Jun 10 to July 7, 1861, the company was attached to the Second Brigade, Second Division of Patterson's Army and went on an expedition to Rockville, MD. He was honorably discharged, at Harrisburg, PA, on 29 July 1861. On 18 April 1865 he enlisted for one year or until the close of the war and served as Second Lieutenant in Co. G, under Capt. J. D. Billheimer, 215th PA Vol. Inf., commanded by Col. F. Wister. He served as Post Adjutant on Col. Schepp's staff until 31 July 1865, when he was honorably discharged. He was a member of Bell Post, GAR, of Easton, PA.
