[NI1605] Like his brother John, Adam Hurd's name first appears in Stratford records in the 1649-50 list of fencing around the Old Field. Residence: Stratford, CT 1650-69. He was a member of First Church Stratford, 14 May 1669, when he signed a petition to the General Court. Adam's wife probably came with him to Stratford, since full home-lots were seldom assigned to unmarried men, but her identity is probably completely unknown, even her first name. She certainly was not Hannah, daughter of John Bartram, who was not yet six when Adam died. Adam's wife had most certainly died before Adam. His inventory was dated 8 Nov 1675, and oath made by John Hurd Jr 2 Mar 1676.

John married first, possibly in England. Her name is not known. She died probably at Stratford, CT 1659/1662. There were no known children from this marriage. John may have come to Stratford with the first settlers in 1639, and at least by 1642. His name first appears on a list of fencing around the Old Field, probably dated 1649-50. In Oct 1644 the General Court of Connecticut appointed him to collect money in Stratford for support of students at Harvard. He was Deputy to the Court from Stratford in May 1649 and at later sessions. He was a miller and millwright by trade. This may be what brought him to Stratford. He is credited with building the second mill, at Eagle's Nest, about 1650. In 1652 the town agreed with him and Thomas Sherwood to build a mill in Stratfield, the site later called the old Mill Green, now in Bridgeport. Sherwood soon sold his interests to John. On 13 Nov 1659 John Hurd sold the mill and site. This deed is the only record of John with his first wife.
f Stratford, and his wife was admitted 27 Dec 1670. This became the Woodbury Church, most of its members moving to found that town in 1673. But John and Sarah remained in Stratford, where he was restored to First Church, 18 Jan 1680/81.
