Our Mideast Trip -- March 1999

Egypt--March 12-21: Ancient Temples:
Queen Hatshepsut, Horus, Kom Ombo & Philae

Above: The Colossi of Memmon, two huge statues of Egyptian Pharoahs from the 18th dynasty. Nearby are the Valley of the Kings and the Valley of the Queens, ancient burial sites of the Pharoahs and their wives.
Right, top: The Temple of Queen Hatshepsut, who ruled from 1502-1487 BC. This was the site of the November '97 terrorist attack.
Right: Two workers use the "old method" of hauling sand up the ramp of the temple.

Above, left: The two of us with Horus, the falcon god.
Above: Mary in front of the huge (aren't they all?) Temple of Horus, which was rebuilt by Alexander the Great in 257 BC.

Above: We pose near the Temple of Kom Ombo, just before sunset.
Right, top & bottom: Far & detailed views of columns at the Kom Ombo Temple, built for Horus the falcon god & Sobek the crocodile god.

Top right: A small boat takes us to the Temple of Philae, near Aswan, which had to be moved from one island to another, rock by rock, in a 7-year project.
Bottom right: Closup view.
Above: The project to move the temple (which otherwise would have been underwater because of the rising waters of the lower dam at Aswan) began in 1973.
