Sutton Genealogy Report
Generation No. 1 1. Thomas Russell1 Sutton was born June 15, 1833 in Kentucky, and died April 14, 1907 in Kentucky. He married (1) Margaret Jane Hopkins June 28, 1855 in Henderson Co., Kentucky. She was born April 12, 1830, and died Bef. December 1870. He married (2) Rebecca Elizabeth Walker December 03, 1870 in Union Co., Kentucky, daughter of James Walker and Rebekah Woodard. She was born January 08, 1833 in Kentucky, and died January 20, 1914 in Charleston, Mississippi Co., Missouri.
Notes for Thomas Russell Sutton:
My mother doesn't remember my Grandfather, William Thomas, ever mentioning his grandfather, Thomas R. Sutton. It is not known what happened to him or where he is buried. Aunt Virgie said she is sure that he died in Kentucky. Paul seems to think he may have died around Sedalia, MO. However, he is not buried with his wife Elizabeth and their son, Walter Lee in Charleston, MO. Thomas Russell Sutton died when my Grandfather was about 7 years old, thus, it is understandable that he didn't remember much about him or speak of him in his later life.Thomas R. Sutton's Bible has a marriage between Margaret J. Hopkins and himself in 1855 written inside. The Henderson County Clerk's office confirmed his marriage to her in that county in 1855. I possess a copy of the marriage certificate. Nothing more is known about Margaret other than the fact that she married Thomas Russell in 1855 and that she is probably the mother of John William Sutton in the old Bible in Paul Russell Sutton's possession.

=============================================================================
Paul Sutton related a story which Aunt Virgie also knew. The story is as follows:
Elizabeth's first husband (which I now know was Samuel P. Tapp) was killed as a result of the border wars during the Civil War somewhere around the Kansas border. He was pulled from his bed in the middle of the night and killed; Elizabeth then fled from there by driving a covered wagon with a small child to Sedalia MO in Pettis County. How she got back to Kentucky is not known. It is she possible that knew someone in Sedalia and that is the reason she went there. It is not known what happened to Samuel Tapp's children after Elizabeth fled.
Paul wrote to the Vernon County Missouri Historical Society in 1982. They responded by sending some information to him. In a book entitled, THE HISTORY OF VERNON COUNTY, by R.I. Holcombe, (Brown and Co., St. Louis, MO 1887) it says, "from the spring of 1862 until the close of the war, the killing went on. The particulars in every instance cannot now be gathered. In the neighborhood of Old Montavallo, one night in February, 1863, five citizens were killed in their homes by the Cedar County Militia. William Wood was killed and a man named Amos was taken from a sick bed and shot, and TAPP, Clendenin and Campbell were killed." The Cedar County Militia were Union forces. The article goes on to say that these people were killed in retaliation for their southern sympathies. No doubt this Tapp killed was Samuel P. Tapp. There were no other Tapp families, except Samuel, listed in Montavallo or anywhere else in Vernon Co. in 1860.
I found court documents in Vernon County Missouri concerning Samuel's estate after his death. There were papers dated August 1866, August 1867, December 1868, and October 1870. The papers said that there were no heirs that could be found. This would harmonize with the story of Elizabeth fleeing right after Samuel was killed. The lady who looked into the file for me said that there were over 100 papers in the packet, she sent me the ones I thought would be of interest for genealogy purposes.
Thomas Russell and Samuel Tapp has some sort of relationship. I don't if they were friends, or relatives, or had some other relationship. Samuel's name is written in TR Sutton's own Bible.
The name of Conro Phillips and his address was also listed in Thomas Russell Sutton's Bible. His address was Maries County Missouri, Avry Post Office. Maries County is located near the center of the state. I couldn't locate this name in the county census records for years 1860 or 1870 in that county. But I did, however, find the name of Conrad Phillips in Henderson County Kentucky in 1850 and 1860. It appears likely that this is the same person. Maybe he was a friend or maybe a family member of
Thomas R. Sutton.I assume that the Mary Allis Tapp listed in the Bible in the possession of Paul R. Sutton is the daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth Walker-Tapp. And the one who went with her from Vernon Co. to Sedalia in the covered wagon. I do not know what happened to her. Vernon County is on the Missouri-Kansas border north of Joplin Missouri and south of Kansas City, Missouri.
Thomas Russell's marriage record to Margaret Jane Hopkins in Henderson Co. and the names and addresses of two Henderson Co. Kentucky residents found in Thomas Russell's own Bible is enough to confirm to me that he lived in Henderson Co. at least in the 1850's. It's also likely that he lived there in 1900, because my Grandfather, William Thomas Sutton was born in Henderson Kentucky in 1900. I have not viewed the 1900 Census in Henderson County Kentucky to confirm this. I have read over the 1870 Census in Union County Kentucky. Since Elizabeth and Thomas Russell married there in 1870, I thought it likely that I would find them there. I did locate Elizabeth and her daughter, Mary, living in the household with Elizabeth's brother Reuben Walker, however, I did not locate Thomas Russell. It's possible that I could have overlooked him, because part of the census was very difficult to read.

3. Walter Lee2 Sutton (Thomas Russell1) was born October 10, 1873 in Kentucky, and died January 24, 1914 in Charleston, Mississippi Co., Misouri. He married Fannie Burton McKinnis July 11, 1895 in Webster Co., Kentucky, daughter of (Neal McKinnis and Margaret Bennett. She was born October 04, 1871 in Tennessee, and died April 06, 1946 in Collinsville, Illinois.
Notes for Walter Lee Sutton:
I located Walter Lee Sutton and the family in Livingston County Kentucky in 1910. Livingston County is west of Union and Henderson Counties and borders the Ohio River. The census confirmed that Thomas Russell Sutton was deceased. Elizabeth was living with them, and she was listed as a widow. I took notice that Sterling, her brother, was born in Tennessee. However, Aunt Virgie seemed to think all the kids but her were born in Kentucky, but according to the census, he was not.Sometime after 1910 the family moved to Mississippi County Missouri near Charleston. Our Sutton family possibly were poor sharecroppers who never owned any property. They did appear to move a lot and I have not been able to discover a paper trail. I haven't been able to prove they ever owned any
property.Paul Sutton, and cousin, Helen Bridges, found the funeral records in Charleston, MO where Elizabeth and Walter Lee Sutton died. He died 4 days after Elizabeth according to the grave stones and their death records, although Aunt Virgie firmly believes that Walter Lee died first. At the time of their deaths, they lived on a farm owned by J.L. Byrd north of Charleston.
Dixie Rolwing, a researcher at the library in Charleston told me that J.L. Byrd was a large property owner at that time. This J.L. Byrd was listed on the records as having paid for the funerals of Walter Lee and Elizabeth. Aunt Virgie said that after the deaths, the family had to move and her mother helped make a living by doing laundry for people. My Grandfather quit school and helped support the family as did his brother Sterling. Aunt Virgie said that when Walter knew he was dying, he called the two boys aside and told them and also to look after their Mother and sisters when he died.
Walter died of pneumonia according to the death certificate. My Mother has the impression that he had chicken pox and contracted pneumonia afterwards. Elizabeth died of pneumonia after having influenza, complicated by old age, according to her death record.
Notes for Fannie Burton McKinnis:
Fannie was of Scottish Descent according to Aunt Virgie. Her family lived in Tennessee, and later moved to Kentucky.
