Waxhaw Scottish Highland Games Brochure

2000 Waxhaw Scottish Games
Below is a text version of the brochure is followed by a graphic of the brochure. The text version is searchable with your browser's find button & one can paste from it & one can change the font size within your browser. I attempted to reproduce the color of the paper & the ink in the text version. The text version has sharp characters so is easier to read. But the text version could have errors due to OCR errors so a graphic of the 2 sides of the brochure are at the bottom to make sure everyone has a true copy of the brochure. Relative sizes of fonts & pictures is correct in the graphic. But the 2 graphics in the brochure are bigger (so clearer) in the text version.

Panel 5
History of the
Waxhaw Scottish Highland Games

The seed for the Waxhaw Scottish Games was first
planted at the Waxhaw Outdoor Drama, "Listen and Re-
member" in 1980. Several actors listening to Bill Caudill
play the bagpipes during intermission remarked on the fact
that since there were so many people of Scottish descent
in this area, it would be wonderful if an annual Scottish
Gathering could be held. Six people, Clay and Dana Nesbit,
Dr. Doug Glasgow and Brooks Lindsey headed by Wiley
and Alice Neal met later in August and planned for the first
Waxhaw Gathering of the Clans to be held on the last
Saturday in October. Within a few weeks other interested
individuals with knowledge of Scottish Activities and Culture
joined the original six and "The Scottish Society of the
Waxhaws" was founded. The Society's first official Officers
were elected, i.e. Brooks Lindsey- Chieftain, Harry
McLaughlin-Vice Chieftain, Carrie Rogers - Secretary, and
Clay Nesbit - Treasurer.
The attendance at the first Scottish Gathering was
about 350. Several Clans were represented and the lone
vendor did a thriving business. On the field, Scottish Athletic
Competition took place. Elsewhere on the property attend-
ees enjoyed a Highland Dancing Exhibition and music pro-
vided by Bagpipes and Tin Whistles.
Over the next few years the Parade of Tartans, High-
land Dancing Competition, Bagpipe Competition and Drum
Competition were added. Lots of fun activities were also
offered, the Bonnie Knees Contest for the Men, the Haggis
Hurl and Broom Toss for the Women, Petting Zoo and
children's games, Border Collie Exhibition, Scottish Fish
Fry and Ceiledh.
The year 1993 proved to be difficult for our Society
Games because of both the weather and lack of having a
Games Field. We survived, however, thanks to contribu-
tions from several individual members of the Robert Burns
Society and the Scottish Society of the Waxhaws. Due to
the generosity of Helen Mahan the 1994 Games were
moved to Briarwood Farm in Waxhaw where they have
flourished and grown substantially in attendance. Under
perfect weather conditions, 1998 was a Banner Year for
the Society Scottish Games.
