Waxhaw Scottish Highland Games Brochure

Official 2000 Waxhaw Games Web Site

Below, a text version of the brochure is followed by a graphic of the brochure. The text version is searchable with your browser's find button & one can paste from the text version & one can change the font size within your browser. I attempted to reproduce the color of the paper & the ink in the text version. The text version has sharp characters so is easier to read than the graphic version. But the text version could have errors due to OCR errors, so a graphic of the 2 sides of the brochure are at the bottom to make sure everyone has a true copy of the brochure. Relative sizes & positions of fonts & pictures are of course correct in the graphic, but the sizes & position of graphics & text & font style of text in the text version differ from the original brochure. The graphic version has usually been decreased to a 1 bit, 2 or 3 color gif to decrease file size & thus speed up your browsing. The text version has display errors in Netscape, but looks fine with Internet Explorer.

The ScoTTIsh SocIeTy
of
The Waxhaws

In 1980, at the Waxhaw Outdoor Drama
"Listen and Remember", several actors listening to Bill
Caudill play the bagpipes during intermission re-
marked on the fact that since there were so many
people of Scottish descent in the area, it would be
wonderful if an annual Scottish Gathering could be
held.
Six people, Clay and Dana Nesbit, Dr. Doug
Glasgow, Brooks Lindsey, and Wiley and Alice Neal
met in August, and planned for the first Waxhaw
Gathering of the Clans, to be held the last Saturday in
October. Within a few weeks others joined the
original six and "The Scottish Society of the
Waxhaws" was founded.
The hIghland Games
The Highland Games are rumored to have
begun nearly one thousand years ago. King Malcome
Canmore (ruling from 1057 to 1092) was said to
have held a race up a mountain side, the winner
becoming the King's personal foot-messenger. From
this race the Braemar Highland Games are said to
have begun. Queen Victoria's love of Scotland
sparked a revival of the Games in the 19th century,
that last to this day.
Since the beginning a thousand years ago,
many events and activities have been added. Track
and field events, piping, pipe bands, Highland danc-
ing, Scottish Country dancing, and many more have
found their way into the modern Games.
In America the Highland Games have risen to
a whole new level. American cities host over 260
Highland Games or festivals each year. The large
turnout of the various Clan and family organizations,
has provided a renewing and strengthening link to our
Scottish heritage.
