of The Waxhaws "Listen and Remember", several actors listening to Bill Caudill play the bagpipes during intermission re- marked on the fact that since there were so many people of Scottish descent in the area, it would be wonderful if an annual Scottish Gathering could be held. Six people, Clay and Dana Nesbit, Dr. Doug Glasgow, Brooks Lindsey, and Wiley and Alice Neal met in August, and planned for the first Waxhaw Gathering of the Clans, to be held the last Saturday in October. Within a few weeks others joined the original six and "The Scottish Society of the Waxhaws" was founded. |
begun nearly one thousand years ago. King Malcome Canmore (ruling from 1057 to 1092) was said to have held a race up a mountain side, the winner becoming the King's personal foot-messenger. From this race the Braemar Highland Games are said to have begun. Queen Victoria's love of Scotland sparked a revival of the Games in the 19th century, that last to this day. Since the beginning a thousand years ago, many events and activities have been added. Track and field events, piping, pipe bands, Highland danc- ing, Scottish Country dancing, and many more have found their way into the modern Games. In America the Highland Games have risen to a whole new level. American cities host over 260 Highland Games or festivals each year. The large turnout of the various Clan and family organizations, has provided a renewing and strengthening link to our Scottish heritage. |
