No RVs are allowed. I saw vehicles at tents at
Indian Springs, but the staff at 800 number says vehicles are to be parked
in parking lot & tents are to be carried in on the trail (dirt road).
There is water, but no electricity. There are picnic tables, fire
pits & latrine pits.
$20/night for group. A group of less than 2 tents would be
impractical.
Each $20 Site holds 25 people.
You pay the State Park for camping in the park, but if you let me
know that you want to camp as part of a group, I will get us a spot.
Phone me at 803-635-9236 or email me at

Even if you live nearby, come bring your family and camp with us.

Pre-registering lets the judges know how many of each weight division
will attend and the feasibility of splitting weight divisions. It lets
the wrestlers no how stiff of competition they are up against so they
can decide if they want to train. It lets prospective engravers decide
if it is worth their time to come engrave our medals with your name, date,
and weight division.
Pre-registration is not required, but
encourages judges & wrestlers to come, since the names & data on each
pre-registered wrestler will appear on the
aforementioned web page. A wrestler is officially pre-registered when his data
(including ancestry) appears on
that web page.
If
not enough
people pre-register, the engraver may not come to engrave the medals, so
encourage us by pre-registering. Wrestlers will be re-weighed and
measured on June 3 so that all measurements are current & done with the
same stick & scales. Your pre-registration measurements, help us decide
the number of weight divisions & thus the number of medals to have on June
3. Kilts will be provided & you will be required to wear them (or your
own kilt) to wrestle. (Naturally we will remove the knives from our socks
and the dirks & swords from our belts before wrestling, though they seem a
part of the kilt.) You will be shown how to don the kilt and expected to
don it yourself, if not wearing your own kilt.
You should wear a belt & come dressed in shorts that ideally come no lower
than the middle of the thigh. The judges will decide if wrestling is to be
done with no shoes &/or no shirt. There is a small admission fee to attend
the festival but it will be refunded if you wrestle.
There will be 1st, 2nd, & 3rd place medals for each division. There is no
age restriction. No strength, skill, or previous experience is required
for this event, but you should be able to withstand someone throwing you
down with their weight coming down on top of you. Bones get brittle, so
those "over the hill" might not want to try this event. The rules can be
covered just before the event starts or you may read the rules at
here. Though some are athletic & have done
highland wrestling before, most of the wrestlers have
never done
this kind of wrestling & are
not on a wrestling team and many
wrestlers in this event are
not athletic. For this reason 5"
thick foam rubber is provided to cushion the falls. Check this web page
for changes in our plans. We are expecting a big turnout. Invite your
kith & kin (friends & kin). You will be required to fill out the above
pedigree to decide the clan you are representing. Once you fill out the
pedigree, the person registering you will look up your ancestor's
surnames to find your best claim to a Scottish clan. You may override
the registrar and tell him your clan, but will be expected to show your
connection to the clan in your pedigree or step parent's pedigree.
Most clans have no one to represent them in each division, so a clan's
wrestlers are the clan's champions regardless of how they do, since the
clan's wrestlers are usually the only ones for miles around brave & bold
enough & caring enough to come wrestle for their family & clan's honor.
Those that wrestle have demonstrated courage & interest. By the "no-show"
of the other local able bodied descendants of their clan, the wrestlers
that come to wrestle are declared the victor over those that did not come
out for their clan. All the wrestlers have championed their clan & thus
are by default, the best of their clan! A clan may enter as many
wrestlers in a division as they like in hopes of winning 1st, 2nd, & 3rd
in each division. A clan (having no way to know for certain who its 3
best wrestlers are) should enter all its wrestlers. A good wrestler may
have bad luck or a bad day & a poor or weak wrestler may have good luck
or through speed & aggressiveness (heart) he may win against bigger,
stronger, heavier wrestlers. A parent or guardian will be required to
sign release for each of their minors. The event will be video taped &
photographed for the report for the web, as shown on this site for
1998 and
1999.
Bring your cameras & camcorders & help us record this for the web.
