Results of the Undeclaired
Wrestlers' Heritage Contest
at the 1999 Indian Springs Hotel Scottish Festival
This is to help me see if there is a good, feasible, and fair way to add heritage to the wrestling. This aspect was not announced before hand so is not as fair this year as it should be, but on the other hand the pedigree was on the registration form & if wrestlers ignored it, then they must not have been much interested in their heritage, so a low score on heritage is fair.

Part of the Wrestling Event should be heritage. I think the wrestlers & other participants should try to find a clan in their ancestry to represent (to participate for), or if there are no clans in their ancestry, they (& all participants) should still memorize & record their pedigree. If they are adopted & do not know their ancestry, the ancestry of their adopted parents should be given. If need be, a step parent may be substituted for a parent. The clan system included giving a child of the chief to be raised by the neighboring chief to insure peace & understanding.

To add heritage, this year I added a pedigree chart to the registration form. Next year I hope to require that the wrestlers learn their ancestors back to their 8 great grandparents (by asking their 2 parents, his 4 & her 4 grandparents), then the wrestler should fill out the pedigree on the registration form without asking questions or looking at any writing thereby demonstrating that they at least have their ancestry in short term memory. I would award 1 point for each surname on the chart (8 greats + 4 grands + 2 parents + self = 15 points). These points should be recorded on the web as a separate part of the wrestling contest. It is hoped they will then take the results of their study & join their clan & report their athletic results to their clan for their clan's report of this games.

* To decide who got 1st, 2nd, & 3rd when they all 3 had all 15 surnames, I looked at who had written down the most given names on their chart. This was not fair, if I told some that I was only interested in the surnames & everything was hectic. Perhaps next year I should give a point for each surname & a point if they include one or more given names or initials for an ancestor. That would mean there are 32 points possible & could give more credit if they go further back.
In judging 1st, 2nd, & 3rd, I did not consider how many clans, septs, & districts were in their chart (which would be a measure of how Scottish each person is). The number of clans, septs, & districts is merely for everyone's interest, and not part of the contest.
