Map of the United Kingdom
Showing Ragsdale Places
showing the National Grid Reference System of Great Britain
showing the letters used to designate the 100 km x 100 km squares

drawn in ASCII Nov 1995 by James W. Green III from outline map

Each character that makes up this map represents 10 km east-west by 16 2/3 km north south, so the map is 1,300 km north-south by 600 km east-west at the top of the map & 700 km east-west at the bottom of the map. Print it & color it while comparing it to a published map of the UK & it will make more sense.

This grid seems to cover part of the Faeroes & perhaps St.Kilda & could be extended to cover the Channel Islands and more. If you want updates to this map (if any updates are made) then write me and ask to be kept posted on any free updates. If you update, improve, or enlarge this & are willing to share it, please let me know.

I would also like to know if anyone is getting line wrap on this map and how narrow of a map they need.

Suggested uses for this map are:
1) This provides a crude map of Great Britain which people on the internet can modify to show & discuss whatever places this scale will allow.
2) This map shows the National Grid and numbers at the bottom & top of this map label each 10 km east-west within a grid as 0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, & 90. Above "10" on this map are the 10 square kilometers numbered on Ordnance Survey maps as 5 through 15. Likewise above the underscore marked "__0" are the 16 2/3 kilometers numbered on Ordnance Survey Maps. One can thereby easily use "the Ordnance Survey Gazeteer of Great Britain" & this map to show the location of every place of a given surname. The gazeteer lists every place labeled on OS's 1:50,000 maps & besides giving its longitude & latitude, it gives the 2 letter grid shown above followed by the 2 digits designatiing how far east in the grid, followed by the 2 digits indicating how far north in the grid. Thus you can round the 2 digits coordinates & mark the location of the place name directly on this gridded map. The 1:50,000 Ordnance Survey maps cover 40 km x 40 km & overlap in some cases, but this map can help find the desired map.
3) This map is not copyrighted since it was drawn by hand while looking at a gridded xerox enlargement of the National Grid diagram printed in various Ordnance Survey products & a Hammond Atlas map of England-Wales & Hammond Atlas map of Scotland & Times Atlas Map of the British Isles. So this ASCII map is from a combination of 3 sources. Since it is not copyrighted, you may use it & change it as suits you. It would be nice to let me know if you find it useful & where you use it, but that is not required. 4) An ASCII map transfers (on the web) perhaps 100 times faster than a scanned map.
5) An ASCII map requires no software to view it or change it.
6) An ASCII map can be emailed even into fidonet requiring no uuencoding, taring, etc.
7) An ASCII map takes up little space on a web site where space is at a premium & can be emailed into fido without annoying sysops about its size.
8) This is an ideal map to which to link other ASCII or scaned maps. I have a few more detailed ASCII maps of areas of Gt.Britain. Let me know if you have any so we can link them on the web.
9) The lettering on this map is clearer than the lettering often found on scanned maps.
10) This map can be stretched north vs. east by printing at different pitches or varying lines per inch.
