    SOUTH CAROLINA 12th INFANTRY REGIMENT
    Company C
    OFFICERS: ...
      Broom, Samuel W. - Sergeant
      ...

      Broom, Charles Powell Alston*
      Broom, J. B.
      Broom, Dr. Thomas Furman ...

*Note that Source 2 & 3 below place C. P. A. Broom in Co. B of the 7th SC Battalion rather than Co. C of the 12th Regt.  I feel certain that C. P. A. Broom was NOT in Co. C of the 12th Regt. as shown in this source.  I suspect the 7th SC Battalion might be "7TH BAT. ENDFIELD R." on the east side of the Confederate Monument in Winnsboro SC

Source 2: Fitz Hugh McMaster's History of Fairfield County SC
    pp. 126, 131, 138-139 lists
(from 25 May 1910 edition of The News & Herald of Winnsboro SC):

Cedar Creek Rifle Company p. 126
    1st Corporal J. B. Broom
    5th Corporal S. W. Broom
    Pvt. J. W. Broom
[In trying to determine if Cedar Creek Rifle Company is truely part of the 6th Regt. SCV as implied on p. 125 in the box below or is in the 12th Regt. SCV as implied by the names in Co. C. of the 12th Regt. SCV, I offer the following extracted from pages 125 - 131.
Fairfield furnished six companies in the 6th, S. C. V., two companies in the 12th S. C. V., ... When the 6th, S. C. V. was organized Col. James H. Rion was colonel, but upon its reorganization Captain John Bratton of the Fairfield Fensibles was made colonel, ... The Sixth S. C. V. Infantry Regiment at the time of its organization in 1861 was composed of ten companies, six of which were almost wholly of Fairfield County men, the other four companies were of men almost wholly of men from Chester and Lancaster counties. The field and staff and the six companies from Fairfield at the time of the organization, as published in The News and Herald, Winnsboro, in a Memorial edition May 25, 1910 follows:
    Field and Staff Officers
    Jas. H. Rion, Colonel; ...

[1] Cedar Creek Rifle Company ...

    [2] Boyce Guards ...

    [3] Fairfield Fencibles ...

    John Bratton, Captain; ...

    [4] Little River Guards ...

    [5] Pickens Guard ...

    [6] Monticello Guards ...

    [7] Buck Head Guards ...

    [8] Co. B, (Lyles' Rifles)

    7th S. C. Battalion as organized November, 1861 ...
Note that there are 7 companies (not 6) before you get to a company that is obviously not part of the 6th Regt. SCV, namely Co. B of the 7th S. C. Battalion. There are 2 ways to explain this discrepancy. Maybe Pickens Guard is not to be counted among the 6 companies from Fairfield since I'd think it was from Pickens Co., but Pickens Guard could have been commissioned by (& named for) a Mr. Pickens since Pickens is a prominent SC family and thus Pickens Guard might not be from Pickens Co., but rather Fairfield and thus should be included in the 6 Fairfield companies in the 6th Regt. So, maybe the discrepancy is explained by excluding Cedar Creek Rifle Co., justifying the exclusion of Cedar Creek Rifle Co. because it seems to have became Co. C. of the 12th Regt., not the 6th Regt.  This will take considerable study to see what the right answer is.]

This map was scanned from Plate 43, map 1 of the Official Military Atlas of the Civil War
Government Printing Office 1891-1895
The above map was cropped from 200 dpi of map which was reduced to 1 bit (2 color) gif, then increased to 16 colors, adding colors as needed until 6 colors were used.  Some text was retyped & some was repaired.  The scale of miles was redone.  The legends & scale were moved in so that the edges could be cropped off.  All of this was done 23 & 24 Feb. 2003.  Click on the above map to see this map before it was cropped.
