The Gate of Heavenly Peace
The Gate of Heavenly Peace sits across from Tiananmen Square. It is a wonderful historical monument that was built in the 15th century and restored during the 17th century. There are 5 doors to the gate and 7 bridges that lay over a stream. Each bridge was restricted in use and only the emperor could use the central door and bridge. In imperial days the gate served as a platform for the emperor to deal with the masses. It is from this gate that Mao proclaimed China the People's Republic on October 1, 1949. Little has changed since this proclamation. Now the dominating feature on the Gate of Heavenly Peace is the portrait of Chairman Mao. On the gate to the left of Mao's picture it says, "Long Live the People's Republic of China" and to the right is "Long Live the Unity of the Peoples of the World." Behind the gate is the Forbidden City. Standing atop of this gate you can see the entire Tiananmen Square, which is quite beautiful. For me it was fascinating standing in the same spot that Mao Zedong did as he spoke to the people of China. The history of this gate is lengthy but well worth the read. I encourage all to read more on the Gate of Heavenly Peace. Graphics and Photographs © Lorien Velasquez. All rights reserved. |
