J. A. Motter was Business Manager of the Board of Trustees of Baker University and the Superintendent of Bethany Methodist Hospital.
Mrs. Annie Motter's Obituary:
Annie E. Brown was born at Mounl Vernon, Ohio, October 19, 1848, and died al her home on South Valley Street, Kansas City, Wyandotte County, Kansas, November 20, l 920. When a mere child her parents moved from Ohio to Illinois and settled near Bloomington. Here she grew to womanhood and on the second day of November, 187l, was united in marriage with J. A. Motter. The same year, with her husband, she came to Kansas and located in Miami County, Where for one year they lived on a farm. The next four years Brother Motter was a student in the Illinois Wesleyan University. In 1878 Brother Motter joined the Kansas Conference and she took up her duties as the wife of a Methodist preacher and for thirty-two years she ministered in this capacity with great efficiency. To this union five children were born. Two of who died in infancy.

Obituary:
"He was a graduate of Wesleyan University, Bloomington, Ill. and later studied medicine in Cincinnati. In 1859 he began practicing in Logansport and the following year moved to Selma, Ala. When the war broke out he joined the Fourth Alabama Volunteer infantry as acting surgeon."
He is in the U.S. Census for 1860 in Selma, Alabama the area where the 4th was formed. However, no list of the 4th Alabama contains his name, although a number of other surgeons are listed.
