This letter was written by Jay S. Motter, Dayton, Indiana; dated Aug. 11, 1938 descendant of Jacob son of Andrew Matter/ Motter.
"Andrew Motter, his father of German extraction, came to America about 1796 accompanied by his wife and seven children and settled in Fairfax County, Virginia, where he a man of considerable wealth and distinction, bought a large tract of land. He was noted for his old-fashioned hospitality and for his love of hunting and sport. After a few years he moved to the vicinity of Hagerstown, MD and later to Chillicothe, Ohio. His last days were spent in Carroll County, Indiana, with some of his children, where his death took place he having been about eighty-four years old. His wife, Elizabeth, born in Germany, June 17, 1772 died about 1855 at the home of her son David in Wisconsin. Andrew Motter was the father of ten children of whom the names of seven only are known: Jonathan, George, William, Andrew, Jacob, Samuel and David."

"------------SHORT STORY OF ANDREW MOTTER
Andrew was born, according to the 1840 census, between 1771 and 1779. It has not been established as to where. Andrew told his son David that the Motter family descended from four brothers that came to America at the same time. He also passed down the story of how this small Motter family crossed over the Rhine and traveled through Switzerland and then finally to America.
Andrew's youth is still a mystery but from family records we know that he spelled his surname MATTER until 1840 and that he married Elizabeth Bauer about 1790. They had a total of ten children and nine were recorded as sons. So far three of the sons, according to their descendants, were born in Virginia. From Virginia he moved near Hagerstown, MD where another Matter/Motter line is recorded. Andrew moved his family to Chillicothe, Ohio (date not recorded) and then by 1816 he is found on the land taxes of Deer Creek Twp., Pickaway County, Ohio.
Andrew was a tailor by trade and according to his son Jacob, "he loved hunting and sport." He was noted for his old-fashioned hospitality. He was also active in his community. In Deer Creek, he was recorded as a Constable and as a Travis Juror. He and Elizabeth were also recorded as members as early as 1825 of the Methodist Episcopal Church in New Holland, Ohio.
While he lived in Deer Creek, he built a log cabin. This cabin had to have been fairly large because in 1836 Andrew sold this property and it was turned into a hotel by the new owners. He and Elizabeth's final move together was to Democrate Twp., Carroll County, Indiana where he lived next door to his son David. Andrew made David his executor of his estate and besides David, he named only three other sons in his Will. According to family records we know that he had at least nine sons. Andrew died on April 28, 1841 and he left the care of Elizabeth to his son David. At this time, Andrew's obituary and cemetery records have not been found.

**NOTE: This researcher has been unable to locate immigration record of Andrew and Elizabeth so he may or may not have been born in Germany but son David, according to his family Bible records, was born in Virginia on Aug. 9, 1797.

Searched for Matter/Mattern/Motter immigrants from 1729 to 1807 and there was no Andrew or Elizabeth listed. There was a group of Matters that arrived on 16 Sept. 1751on the ship Edinburgh: Hans Adtam Matter, Georg Matter, Jacob Matter, Hans Matter. Valtin (Valentine) Matter and his brother George arrived on the ship Brothers. On 7 Oct 1751, a Diewalt Matter arrived on the ship Janet. Only the MEN were recorded on the passenger list. Their wives and children were not recorded. Han Adtam (aka John Adam Mattern) had his family with him: wife Maria Magdalena Quirin and four children. One child was named Andreas Matter born 29 Feb 1748 in Ingwiller, Alsace, France. To my knowledge no one has researched this Andreas. (Our family records from DAVID, SR.'s descendants state that our MOTTER line originated from four brothers who came to America.)
**There has been considerable research on these four MATTER men by the Matter/Motter Researchers back to the early 1600's in Alsace Lorraine, Germany-France. What's interesting about this line is that the children of John Adam Mattern all lived near Hagerstown, Washington Co., MD then later moved on to Franklin Twp., Huntingdon, PA. One Mattern named John, born 1778 near Hagerstown, MD married Nancy Tipton and they moved to Archer Twp., Harrison Co., OH. In my research of Pickaway, there was a Dr. T. C. Tipton listed as a resident in "The History of Franklin and Pickaway Counties, Ohio" and a THOMAS TIPTON in the 1810 Federal census of Pickaway County, OH. Unfortunately, the Matter/Motter Researchers have no information on our Andrew.

All males over sixteen years of age who had to take the oath as soon as they got off the ships. According to this source the ship St. Mark landed Sept. 26, 1741 with Johannes Maetter. The ship Brothers landed Sept. 16, 1751 with Valentin and George Matter. The ship Edinburgh also landed on the 16th of Sept. 1751 with Georg, Hans Adam and Jacob Matter. The ship Janet landed Oct. 7, 1751 with Diewald Matter. The ship Minerva landed Oct. 13, 1769 with Stanislaus Matter.

Valentine MOTTER and Henry BAUER witnessed the naturalization of John Grisman Pope of Frederick Co., MD on 10 Apr. 1762 in Annapolis. Valentine is recorded as early as 20 Jan 1760 when he bought Lot 86 in Sharpsburgh from Joseph Chapline for one shilling; on 22 Oct he bought Lot 55 from Chapline for 2.10 pounds. Valentine settled in Middletown Valley, MD. Valentine continued to purchase property until he had acquired about 1700 acres on both sides of the main road from Middletown to Frederick, including much of what is now called Fountaindale.
NOTE: I am not sure, at this time, how Valentine connects into our line but he is recorded with the BAUER surname.

Andrew and wife stated, on the 1840 census, that they were both older than 60 but less than 70 years old. That makes their birth between the years 1771 and 1779.
SOURCE: David, Jr., grandson of Andrew, gave the following information to his descendants:
David told his descendants that his ancestors crossed over the Rhine River and traveled through Germany and Switzerland to come to America and that they took their family name from the Matterhorn in Switzerland.
NOTE: I wasn't sure about this story until I started searching the census records and sure enough on the 1800 and 1810 census in Pennsylvania there was a large family that gave their name as MATHORN. By the 1820 census, the same family members gave their name as MATTERN/MATTER. By the 1840 and 1850 census some had changed their name to MOTTER/MOTTERN. According to the Genealogies by the Library of Congress since 1986 Section II the MATHORN, MATTER, MATTERN, MOTTER, MOTTERN families are also identified with the MATTERHORN surname.

Andrew Motter and wife were early members of the Methodist Episcopal Church of New Holland which was organized as early as the year 1825. No early records could be found for this church but Andrew Motter and wife were listed as members of the first class of twelve under the leadership of Samuel Hosselton. Jonathan Motter and wife were members of the Cedar Grove Methodist Episcopal Church."

Leslie did an excellent study on the Motters of Pickaway County. In her research, she stated that from 1816 to 1820 she found the marriage records of three Motter's: William and Ari (Short) Motter, George and Mary "Polly" (Knowles) Motter, and Jonathan and Elizabeth (Holloway) Motter. Marriages were listed in the Early Ohio Marriages--Ross County.
Our David was born in VA and so was his brother George and as for Jonathan one son said he was born in VA and the other said PA. While researching our line in Virginia, Leslie records the following: Vol. 8 Virginia State Papers published in Williamsburg 12 Mar 1776, page 119 states: " Mr. George Mater and Lieutenant Denny are appointed to examine the several Ship materials offered for sale by Major Travis at Jamestown, and report to committee whether they are good of the kind and in their opinion worth the money he asks for them."
In our letter co-respondence of 1995-96, Leslie informed me that she feels that the Motters of Pickaway county, OH are all related and very probably brothers but has been unable to find the records. At the writing of her book she did not have all the information on Andrew or his son David. We both agree that the sons of Andrew need to be researched to find the immigration pattern of this family and the order of birth of each child. There is a very good possibility that Andrew, like his son David, used the old European naming pattern. Based on her research of this family she feels that future research should be concentrated in Frederick Co., Maryland, York Co., PA, Richmond and Williamsburg, VA.

* Andrew purchased Section 5 in the Democrat Township of Carroll Co., Indiana on Sept 27, 1836
* Andrew lived next to son David who moved there in 1829 in Section 7. David was the second white man to settle this area.
* Will of Andrew filed in April 1841; No obituary or cemetery record could be found; Son David was the administrator of the will. Andrew did not mention his wife in the Will but he did list the following children: DAVID, JACOB, GEORGE J., and SAMUEL C. MOTTER. He also left some of his personal items to W. Compton and Caleb Compton. (David's son Andrew married Elizabeth Compton)

When I requested information on Motters in Carroll County, the Historical Society included the information on ZACHARIAH MOTTER who married Hannah Bridge in Carroll County on 12 Sep 1872 (Book 6 pg 407). He was listed as a Civil War Veteran. He died 5 Mar 1882 at the age of 41-9mo-16 days and was buried in Deer Creek United Brethren Cem., Carroll Co., IN. His wife Hannah died 8 Aug 1903 at the age of 61 years and was buried in Deer Creek U. B. Cemetery. I believe that ZACHARIAH was the son of Frederick and Mary Motter. Frederick was on the 1850 Federal Census of Miami County, OH stating that he was born in PA in 1805 and listed six children on the census and one was Zachariah born 1840. There is a very good possibility that this family is related to our Motters. "
