The town site of Piqua began with the coming of the St. Louis, Ft. Scott, and Wichita Western Railway. "Piqua" received it's name from the superintendent of construction of the Railroad, he being from the County of "Pickway," Ohio. The early settlers of the Piqua community came from the most part, from the states of Illinois, Pennsylvania, Indiana, and Missouri. Piqua at one time had a hardware store, general store, Blacksmith shop, 2 hotels, a grist mill, bank, restaurant, furniture store, 2 churches, and a coffin maker. The St. Martin Catholic Church and steeple are both historic landmarks. Built in 1884, the church as beckoned travelers for over 100 years.

Piqua is a village in Neosho Falls Township at the crossing of the St. Louis, Fort Scott & Wichita and the Missouri Pacific Railways. It is in a sort the successor of Bramlette, a station about a mile below, which was abandoned by the railway after the building of the new east and west road. The main street of the village is upon a half section line, the land upon the north being owned by George A. Bowlus, of Iola, and that on the south by P. C. T. Buck who used it for farming purposes. The town started in the spring of 1882, the store of J. W. Kesterson being the first building. Next came the blacksmith shop of John Kipp, and third the residence of Dr. J. Beekman. Street & McClure soon afterward erected a store building, which burned November 8, 1882. A schoolhouse was erected in 1882 at a cost of $1,000, and has an attendance of sixteen. It is taught by Miss Nannie Stewart. The Methodists have recently organized a society, with twenty members, at this point, and completed a church edifice in December, 1882. Services are held by the pastor of the church at Neosho Falls. A post office was established in the spring of 1882, and M. Street appointed Postmaster. The town now has one store, one school, one church, one lumber yard and a dozen residences. A hotel building is in the process of erection.
In the fall of 1881, the only cross-country railway that ever became a reality in Woodson County made a proposition for the subscription of bonds to its stock. This road, the St. Louis, Fort Scott & Wichita, asked $28,000 of Center and $22,000 of Toronto Township. The measure met with comparatively little opposition in either place and passed by 124 to 71 in Center and 64 to 14 in Toronto. Work was at once begun on the road. On the 1st of January, 1883, this road was completed to El Dorado, Butler county, Kan., 133 miles west of Fort Scott.

"John Gaffney, division roadmaster of the Missouri Pacific, is dead. A special train was tendered by the missouri pacific for the funeral party, which left Eldorado for Piqua, Kan."
'Butler County Democrat' Thursday August 28, 1890, Vol. VIII Old Series, New Series Vol. 1 No. 42
"Died in El Dorado on August 24 h. John Gaffney aged 54 years. The deceased has not been well since he had the grippe last winter, but has been able to be around until very recently. He was taken sick and never recovered. Mr. Gaffney has been road master on the Fort Scott & Wichita road ever since it was built, and was very popular with officials and employees of the road. He leaves five children the youngest being eight years of age. His remains were taken to Woodson County where they were laid to rest by the side of his wife who died about five years ago."
'The Repubican', Butler County, August 29, 1890
"Died John Gaffney
Sunday morning John Gaffney division road master of the Missouri Pacific, died at his home after a short illness. The deceased was one of the best know railroad men tin southern Kansas and wherever his name was spoken it was with a respect for the sterling qualities of integrity which Gaffney possessed.
The deceased was born in Worcester, Massachusetts, in 1836 and was taken by his parents to Illinois when a child.
In 1881 he began work for the St. Louis, Fort Scott and Wichita rail road, and laid the first track for that company.
He was afterwards make general road master of the road and when that office was abolished he was given the poisition of division road master, which place he held until his death. He was esteemed very highly by the officials of the road, and when his death was feared Father Dooley, of the Catholic church was given a special train to hasten to his bedside. Another special was given to the funeral party that accompanied his remains to their last resting place at Piqua where Mrs. Gaffney was buried five years ago. Two daughters and five sons remain with his many friends to mourn his loss."
