| 1). A clean look is always good. Keep
like items together |
| and use separator bars to divide different sections of your page
. |
| Center your pages to avoid an unbalanced look. Graphics
and |
| words running into a border ruin the whole look
of your page. |
| Everything. to one also gives your page a very strange
look. |
| 2). Do not make your pages too long. Divide up
topics and use |
| use separate pages. A page that goes on forever will take
a long |
| time to load, and your visitor will lose interest before your
page loads. |
| 3). If you choose to place music on your site, be sure the
file is |
| small enough to load quickly. Please remember to place an
icon |
| on your page so your visitor can turn the music off. Hidden
music |
| players are a great annoyance. Your visitor may not wish to hear |
| your music played endlessly. |
| 4). When using one of the many border sets available free for |
| personal use, give credit where credit is due - on the page you |
| use the graphics. The artist has spent time designing
the set |
| and was kind enough to offer them free; the least you can do is |
| give theartists credit on the page you use their work on, and a |
| link back to their site. |
| 5). Color does matter. |
| Decide on a color scheme for your page of no more than 4 basic |
| colors, and stick to it. You will end with a clean attractive
page |
| Use a color chart to be sure your colors are web safe . You
can |
| find an excellent one at |
| 6). Make a separate page for your web rings. |
| They take up a lot of room and will make your home page very |
| slow to load. |
| 7). Check out your links. |
| Be sure your page does not contain dead links. |
| 8). Make your site easy to navigate. |
| You should be able to reach any page of your site from
any page |
| without going back to the main or home page. Place link buttons, |
| a pull down menu, a directory, or a navigation bar on
every page. |
| 9). Tell your visitor a little about
you. |
| They have come to visit your cyber home.
An endless list of |
| links to other sites really does not tell them much about you. |
| You need to place some content on your site. Before you start |
| decide what kind of a web site you want, and build from there. |
| 10). Be sure the background you choose will allow
your lettering |
| to be read easily. Neon, flashing, or text the same color
or near the |
| color of the background is very annoying to anyone visiting you |
| 11). Place alt tags under all your graphics. |
| You eliminate a lot of visitors by failing to do this. Some
people surf |
| the net with the graphics turned off. They may be on limited hours, |
| or they may just not have a lot of time to spend on the net.
Without |
| alt tags they will not be back to your site. |
After considering the above, remember, this is your site, and as
such should reflect you, so have fun and if you bend a few rules--
well after all it is your site.
