1. James¹ McCallister was born 1730 in Ireland, and died August 1801 in Bath Co VA. He married Mary McGloughlin 20 January 1746/47 in Pennsylvania¹.

Notes for James McCallister:

The entire genealogy of this line from the supposed progenitor James until his will (either 1800 or 1801 I can't remember offhand) is highly suspect. If he did in fact marry in PA 20 January 1746/47 as previous

researchers say, his son Richard could not not have been born in Ireland as some report. After his will (wife Mary, daughters Hannah and Mary, grandsons, children: Thomas, John, Richard, Edward, and Garrett; and son James. see Bath Co., Va will book 1 pp 107-108, 194-195) the line is very well documented. But I really don't think anyone knows the truth on this family prior to the will.

People found a marriage in PA for a James McCallister & a Mary. They then see the will and assume it's the same people. Well, James & Mary are very common names. I have also not seen any proof that James & Mary were born in Ireland. There were some McAllister families in the NE who arrived in the

US in the early 1700s. So, James could have been a child of that family. Don't really know because the data just isn't there. Also, where is the documented proof for the birth years for James and his wife?

Here's information on John McCallister:

Occupation: Farmer. He married, first, Mary Ann Logue7, daughter of Samuel

Logue Senior and Unknown, 19 Jan 1779, in Botetourt Co., VA8. Mar License,

7 Jan 1779, in Botetourt Co., VA9. He married, second, Mary Kincaid,

daughter of Robert Kincaid, 19 Jun 1800, in Bath Co., VA10. In 1775 John

McAllister bought 117 acres of land on Dunlap Creek for 55 pounds. He must

at least have been 21 at the time of that purchase. (Owen F. Morton. A

John and Mary Ann were included in the marriage records of the Rev. John

Alderson. The marriage banns were filed in Botetourt County, and the

marriage was filed in Greenbrier County, although it probably took place

in Botetourt.

In 1782 John was appointed Surveyor of the Road in Botetourt County.

(Summers. p. 364.) In 1787 John was shown on the tax list in Botetourt

County, paying taxes for 10 horses and 12 cow~. (Ya~tis. p. 219.) Joseph

Malcolm sued John and his w~fe Ann on December 28, 1792, in Bath County.

(Chalkley. Vol. II. p. 16.) In October of 1796 and May of 1797 John served

as a juror for the district court for Greenbrier, Botetourt, Montgomery,

and Kanawha Counties. (Larry G. Shuck. Greenbrier County (West) Virginia

Records. Athens, Georgia. Iberian. 1988. Vol. 1. pp. 341, 345.) In a

petition filed in December 9, 1797, John, listed as from Botetourt County,

requested that a road be made between Botetourt Courthouse to Sweet

Springs. (Seed-Bed of the Republic. pp. 156-158.) In April of 1799,

John and Mary Ann of Botetourt sold 580 acres of land on top of the Big

Cove Mountain, on the waters of the Dunlap, to Andrew Of fut. (Shuck. Vol.

1. p. 356.) By 1803 John was shown in Monroe County, West Virginia. (Deed.

Bath Co., Virginia. Book 2. p. 543. Copy.)

Since the signature on the marriage record of John McAllister to Mary

Kincaid appears to be the same as the signature on the record of John

McAllister to Mary Ann Logue, Mary Kincaid has been listed as a second

wife for John. More information still needs to be located to verify this

claim.

In his will John specified that his debts were to be paid by the sale of

land that he had purchased from William White. Any money left over from

the land Bale was to be applied to the house being built on John's

property. John gave his wife Mary Ann a third of the plantation and two

thirds of the household and kitchen furniture. Jane Weaver, Polly Miller,

and Nelly Tolbert, John's daughters, each got 20 shillings and the

property he had already given them. Daughter Mary Ann McAllister received $40

and a third of the household and kitchen furniture. Son James

McAllister received part of the plantation where John resided; son Samuel

McAllister received the rest of the plantation. Although James was the

executor of the estate, John's brother Thomas and his nephew William made

the final settlement. John's estate was considerable: he owned much

livestock, a spinning wheel, a shot gun, books and spectacles, a sausage

stuffer, a loom, a looking glass, 20 head of sheep, 16 head of hog, and a

great deal of furniture. There were also five slaves - Comfort, Lucy,

George, Charles, and Nelson. The entire estate appraisal came to $1235.18.

Imprimis--It is my will and desire that my body after my death

shall be decently buried and that all my funeral expenses be paid by my Executors hereafter named, out of the Estate which shall be committed to his hand for distribution.

2nd. It is my will and desire that all my just debts be paid by my

Executor as soon as possible after my decease.

3rd. It is my will and desire and I therefore give and bequeath

unto my wife Jane McCallister one third part of my whole Estate real as well as personal to be by her enjoyed during her natural life and at her death I bequeath the same to my Daughter Mary Ann McCallister to be hers forever.

4th. It is my will and desire and I bequeath accordingly that

after my decease my son William McAllister shall have the remainder of my land after my wife shall have taken her third, to hold to him and his heirs forever with the exception of a tract of land call the Mountain survey which I wish my executor to sell and to distribute the money arising thereof as I shall herein after

direct.

5th. It is my will and desire that the balance of the personal estate of which I may die possessed shall be sold by my Executors and the money arising therefrom to be distributed in the following manner: Mary Ann McAllister, Polly McAllister Reece, Synthia McAllister, Polly Ann Smith, each to have one fifth part and the remaining fifth to be equally divided between the children of my deceased daughter Betsy Smith. I also desire that the money arising from the sale of the mountain survey be divided amongst my said daughters and

grandchildren in the same manner. I do hereby ordain constitute and appoint my friend Wm. H. Terrill and Leonard Buzzard to act as my Executors in carrying into effect the provisions of this my last will and testament. William came to Mason Co. around 1834. He located on 140 acre farm, Clendenin dist. and there died in 1864. William's wife was Jane Edgar and their children were -Martha A,Mary Jane, Thomas, Harrison, John, William, Andrew, Meniah, Samuel and Amanda. I think, but cannot prove, that William McCallister was born in Bath Co.

VA. There is a story of four brothers, etc... He may have been the son

of James, son of Thomas. Someone sent me some charts for Thomas and

James McCallister. James will (wr. 1799) names "William son of my son

Thomas". James other children, per will, were John, Richard, Edward,

Garret, Hannah and Mary. Thomas's children, per Bob's chart, were

William, Elizabeth, Hannah, Sally, Polly and Nancy. Bob's story is that

four brothers from Bath Co. moved to Mason Co. before 1800, and that

three (including his Garrett) went on to Indiana. Was my William the

one who stayed behind? Timing's right here, but everything else needs to

be proved. An elderly McCallister cousin tells me that some of these

families lived in Lincoln Co. W.Va.

My family was from Putnam Co., which was formed from Mason, Kanawha and

Cabell in 1848.

It seems that Olivia's father was James McCallister and she married a James McCallister, probably a cousin. An 1860 annotated census, Cabell Co, lists Olivia married to a James McCallister. Neighbors are Joseph, Malcom, Isaac McCallister and living with her is an Allen McCallister. Malcom states he is the son of James and Mary(Smith)McCallister so that would make Olivia the daughter of James McCallister and Mary Smith. soooooo, James & Mary begat Olivia, who is a McCallister, and marries another James McCallister: James & Olivia begat Elizabeth (Eliza) McCallister who marries Joseph McCallister son of ?. These McCallisters needed to branch out a little further on their family

tree, hahahaha. Tuck this away, hope to have more, Barbara.

Now remember that their mother Cynthia McCallister died sometime between 1870 & 1874 because her husband John Eli

Kirk remarried in 1874. Her previous husband was Richard of the J04 line. I'll try to scan it in this weekend and put it on my

Calvary McCallister served as the guardian of Wesley Goulsby and Cynthia Ann McCallister, they had an accounting in Putnam County, WV in February, 1882. By that time Cynthia Ann was married (?) and why would she be still be considered "infant heirs of Richard McCallister"?

Calvary McCallister also served as the guardian for Perry H. McCallister, "a settlement ... of the guardian account of Calvary McCallister, guardian of Perry H. McCallister ... filed ... 14 January 1888." this is on p. 55 of Putnam county WV Court Orders, dated Wednesday July 18, 1888.

Last year I sent out an e-mail looking for some census

info on my great-great-grandfather George Robert and his brother Shelby

McCallister. I was sent this information: 1880 Census of Mason Co. WV.

(the lady also said that there were several more families listed for that

area, including a Harrison and wife Rachel, to whom she was related) Now

going by this information, that would put John's birth around 1817 and

Julia's around 1837. Now the age for George R. is correct, 'cause he was

born 1/8/1868 in Putnam Co. WV. And I know for sure that he had a brother

Shelby. I recieved George Robert's death certificate a few weeks ago, and

his parents names were listed as John McCallister and Julia Lanum.

Now according to the J04 line information, a John C. McCallister married a

Julie E. Lanham Dec 2, 1860 and is noted that they had 6 kids of which

one's name is not known. The known names that are listed are: Walter,

Beatrice, Lizzie, Annie, Shelby. And it is listed that John had a brother

named Harrison who had a wife by the name of Rachel. And John and

Harrison's parent's were William McCallister and Jane Edgar.

BUT, in the FTW gedcom it has a Julie Lannum(born 1849) marrying a Wm. T.

McCallister on Dec. 2, 1860(making her 11 when they got married), who

happens to be the brother to a John and Harrison McCallister whose parents

are William McCallister and Jane Edgar. (Now in my opinion the FTW gedcom

seems to be wrong, but I'd have to ask the person who sent it to review

the

information again.)

So my question is: Who's right? And are these the one and same John and

Julia? And if so, who are the right children? The census children or the

J04 children? Which is the right source? I have just gotten in contact

with another descendant of George Robert and she feels that John C. is the

right one , but the children are the puzzle.

Candie also mentions a will of James McCallister: Aug 8, 1854 states a

son Malcom and a daughter Olivia. It seems that Olivia's father was James

McCallister and she married a James McCallister, probably a cousin. An 1860

annotated census, Cabell Co, lists Olivia married to a James McCallister.

Neighbors are Joseph, Malcom, Isaac McCallister and living with her is an

Allen McCallister. Malcom states he is the son of James and

Mary(Smith)McCallister so that would make Olivia the daughter of James

McCallister and Mary Smith. soooooo, James & Mary begat Olivia, who is a

McCallister, and marries another James McCallister: James & Olivia begat

Elizabeth (Eliza) McCallister who marries Joseph McCallister son of ?.

These McCallisters needed to branch out a little further on their family

Sarah. I recently found land records of his children selling land patented by

Joseph Kirtley. This indicates Sarah probably was a Kirtley.

Thier daughter Edna married Robert Garrett son of James and Nancy Ray?

Garrett, and their son Samson E married Catherine Hall daughter of Andrew and

Elizabeth Hall. This transpired from 1812 to 1880. All of these families were

in the Putnam, Lincoln, Cabel area. I would like to exchange info on any of

these families

I am looking for info about Isaac McCallister's Civil War service. I

recently spoke with a cousin in Cabell County Wv. Jessie Sovine (87).

She told me that my GGGrandmothers father was killed in the Civil War.

I recently recieved from Mason County Clerk, a copy of the marriage

record of Ellen McCallister to Lindley R White in Mason Co, 1877. There

was an attachment a note from Ellen's mother giving her permission for

Ellen to mary.(she was under age) In the note the mother states that her

first husband(Ellen's father) was killed in the "late war".

I have been stumped trying to find Ellen's parents for some time. Ellens

parents were Isaac McCallister and Mary Jane Chapman.(married 1859 in

Cabell Co.) Isaac and Mary Jane were both born in Mason in 1840.

I am looking for any info that would indicate Isaac's military service.

Regiment, etc. What regiments were recruited from Mason/Cabell ?? Which

side did he fight on ?? I would quess the Union, but I am not sure.

Do you have any info on Isaac McCallister ?? His parents were James

McCallister and Nancy McCown. James parents were Richard McCallister and

Margaret Nickell.(Richard 1st..1756-1825)

I was looking at your information on the JO4 McAllister line and found

an error. My grandfather was John William McAllister. His birth and

death dates are wrong. He was born March 7, 1898 and died March 11,

1973. I also have information on his children which were not listed.

John William McAllister's parents were George Robert McAllister and Mary

Luella Bateman. I also discovered an error with one of George Robert's

and Mary Luella's children. The child is Ray McAllister. You have his

birthdate to be abt. 1896. We still can not find any information on him

but my Great-Aunt Mae McAllister Kistler (another of George and Mary

Luella's children) has told us that he was born sometime between 1909

The 1880 Montague Co, Texas census enumerator spelled the name TEVIS.

However, on the land sale dated Dec 27, 1880, the clerk spelled the name as

TIVES. The family has no other source of information or knowledge about the

family. We only know it exists due to the land sale agreement. My distant

cousin, Betty Torres, and I were researching the census record at the same

time. She in Calif. and I in MA. She didn't record the TEVIS family whereas

I did since the wife was born in VA. then when Betty obtained a copy of the

land sale, the Tevis family was listed. At that point, I sent her the census

listing of the family. Unfortunately, the enumerator only recorded initials.

After his mother left his father to go with another man, Leander McCallister did not raise his children. They were placed in various homes and eventually lost contact with each other. Charles was raised by the Colsaw family in Arkansas and assumed their name. Doubtful that they went through formal adoption proceedings. My G-grandmother, Sarah placed a notice in a paper circulated amongst farmers and eventually re-united the children. Of course, they were all adults. Charles did stop by one time that is known.
