How To Write a Web Page

The big idea

The Internet is absolutely amazing, because ANYBODY can write and publish material there. This very online guide you're reading is proof of that.

Before you begin

Unfortunately for most of us, you can't just type something up and slap it onto the World Wide Web. You have to put it into a special code or language called HTML (which stands for HyperText Markup Language). Learning HTML is a time-consuming process. Fortunately, though, I can speed the process up by giving you a template you can copy and paste. Then you can just type your story or poem or whatever right into the template.

If you find that you simply can't get your HTML to work, ask for help. Writing HTML can be a very frustrating experience!

How to do it


Follow these steps:

  1. Highlight and copy everything in red boldface type below and paste it into a new SimpleText document.
  2. Read everything in green type, then get rid of the green type. It shows you where to type your stuff, but if you don't delete it, it will show up as part of your page.
  3. Every time you HAVE to go to the next line, type <BR>.
  4. Every time you HAVE to skip a line, type <P>.
  5. SAVE changes before you try to view them.
  6. RELOAD your browser before you try to view your changes.
