Recently my friends and I seem to have been using more and more old sayings/proverbs
to describe situations that we have found ourselves in. Of course there is always one that
will contradict another, but they are interesting to know, hence I have compiled a list of
some of my favourites, not all of the commonly used ones are on the list, but the ones
that have the best meanings.
"I can forgive but I cannot forget" is only another way of saying, "I cannot forgive".
A bad penny always turns up.
The devil can cite Scripture for his purpose.
Familiarity breeds contempt.
Ignorance is bliss.
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

What will be, will be.
All's fair in love and war.

Every cloud has a silver lining.
The bigger they come the harder they fall.
Discretion is the better part of valor.
Easy come, easy go.

One man's meat is another man's poison.
For want of a nail the kingdom was lost.
Love conquers all.
A new broom sweeps clean.
It's never too late to mend.
No man is an island.
A man is known by the company he keeps.
You're never too old to learn.
No man can serve two masters.
No news is good news.
Nothing succeeds like success.
Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
Oil and water don't mix.
Once bitten, twice shy.
One good turn deserves another.
One picture is worth a thousand words.
One rotten apple spoils the barrel.
Out of sight, out of mind.
It never rains but it pours.
There's more than one way to skin a cat.
Absence makes the heart grow fonder.
Actions speak louder than words.
All roads lead to Rome.
Any port in a storm.
Bad news travels fast.
Beauty is only skin deep.
Even the best of friends must part.
The course of true love never did run smooth.
In this world nothing death and taxes.
Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
Every dog has his day.
East is East, and West is West, and never the twain shall meet.
To err is human, to forgive divine.
There are plenty of fish in the sea.
A fool and his money are soon parted.
There's no fool like an old fool.
Fools rush in where angels fear to tread.
Forewarned is forearmed.
Give the devil his due.
Give him enough rope and he'll hang himself.
God helps those who help themselves.
A good man is hard to find.
The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.
Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.
He who hesitates is lost.
Honesty is the best policy.
If at first you don't succeed, try, try again.
If wishes were horses, then beggars would ride.
Lightning never strikes twice in the same place.
Little strokes fell great oaks.
Love makes the world go round.
You've made your bed, now lie in it.
The road to hell is paved with good intentions.
You can't fit a round peg in a square hole.
Seeing is believing.
Silence is golden; speech is silver.
A soft answer turneth away wrath.
Truth will out.
You can't unscramble an egg.
Walls have ears.
It's not whether you win or lose, it's how you play the game.
As the worm turns.
You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink.
If anyone knows of any other good ones that aren't on the list, let me know and I'll add them.
