Subject: Family Tree DNA Kit Received

Dear Family Tree DNA Customer:

Your DNA sample kit, number ****, was received today at Family Tree DNA.

The next step is the processing of your sample at our lab. When the lab has completed the processing, you will be notified immediately by email. The email will give directions for viewing your results online at FamilyTreeDNA.com. You will be logging into FamilyTreeDNA.com, using your kit number and a password, *****. We recommend recording your kit number and password in a safe place, or keeping this email.

Typical times between receiving kits and the availability of lab results for various tests are:

12 Marker Y-DNA- 4 weeks
25 Marker Y-DNA- 5 weeks
12 to 25 Marker Y-DNA Upgrade- 4 Weeks
mtDNA Tests- 5 Weeks

These times are for tests that have a successful outcome from the first run at the lab. Approximately 85% of the first runs are successful. The tests are rerun on the other 15% until a good result is obtained. Unfortunately, each rerun adds two weeks to the process.

We understand that the delay is frustrating to participants. When a delay occurs, your sample is being rerun as many times as it takes to achieve a successful result.

Thank you for choosing Family Tree DNA,

Why Tests are:
"Pending Shipment to the Lab"
Pending Shipment to the Lab: Kits in this state are currently residing at FamilyTreeDNA.  The kit resides at FamilyTreeDNA until a batch is accumulated to be shipped to the lab.  Kit batches are shipped to the lab every two weeks.

Subject: schedule for shipping to lab?

Bennett,

In your email below [above], you say it takes 5 weeks typically "between [FT DNA?] receiving kits and the availability of lab results". Last night I discovered that 3 of our kits are "Pending Shipment to Lab". I am trying to tell my members as accurately as I can, when to expect their results. How long does it take the lab to get you the results (for a 25 Marker Y test & a 12 marker Y test) from the date you ship them the DNA (from when you put the DNA in snailmail to the lab until the Lab gives you the results)?

2nd question. Your: http://www.familytreedna.com/ftGroupQRGuide.html#Pending

says "The kit resides at FamilyTreeDNA until a batch is accumulated to be shipped to the lab. Kit batches are shipped to the lab every two weeks."

Do you ship on a certain day of the week every other week? If so, when? When will the current 3 samples be shipped?

Hi James

Answers to your questions below:

We ship via Fed Ex to the lab every other Saturday, for tomorrow afternoon we'll create a batch. The lab will receive the batch on Monday Morning and will begin extraction on Monday afternoon. Typically I get results from the lab in 2 or 3 weeks from the day we deliver to them, so when I add the total amount of time a kit could be in a 'pending' status (2 weeks) I say 5 weeks from time the kit arrives here until we should have results.

Quite often the turnaround time is less, but I prefer to under promise and over deliver.

E-mail any time.
