Family Tree DNA recommends establishing the Project with the 12 marker Y chromosome test.  12 markers are sufficient to determine whether or not two people are related.  In addition, the 12 marker Project Price of $99 is more affordable for participants, enabling you to recruit more participants.

The value of the 25 marker test occurs when two participants are related based on the 12 marker test.  When participants match in the 12 marker test, the test can be upgraded to 25 markers for a small additional fee of $90.  The objective of the upgrade to the 25 marker test is to reduce the time frame of the common ancestor between the matching participants.  The common ancestor also referred to as the Most Recent Common Ancestor, or MRCA.

Typically, participants are very interested in upgrading their 12 marker test to 25 markers when a match occurs.  Two individuals are considered related for the 12 marker test if they match 12/12, 11/12, and sometimes with 10/12.  In the first two situations, an upgrade to the 25 marker test is recommended.

per his video 24:09 to 24:43
"On the other hand, because Europe was settled according to the Antropologists recently, only in the last 15,000 years and by a group of people who were very homogeneous, the DNA in Western Europe is less diverse than any other geographical area on the planet.  Consequently, we offer not only a 12 marker test, but also a 25 marker test, so that you are able to be a little bit more discriminating about who you really say is a member of your family."

Recommendation of the Project Administrator

I recommend the 25 marker test because:
  1. You can expect to see test results from GREEN/Es whose DNA matches your DNA on all 12 markers.  Otherwise some of the objectives of the tests may not be fulfilled.  To see if you are close kin to those who match your results, you will need the 25 marker test.
  2. The 25 marker test ($169) is $20 cheaper than ordering the 12 marker test ($99) & later increasing it to 25 markers (+$90 = $189).
  3. The price per marker for the 25 marker test is $169/25 = $6.76 per marker, whereas the 12 marker test is $99/12 = $8.25 per marker.  So the 25 marker test is cheaper by $1.49 per marker.  To look at it another way, you get 12 markers for about $100, but for $70 more (far less than twice the cost) you get more than twice the number of markers (25 markers instead of 12).

The decision is yours and perhaps 12 markers would satisfy your goals better.  I am strongly considering paying for 12 marker tests for one of my mom's nephews (a BROOM) & for one of my mom's maternal 1st cousin's sons (a KILLIAN), since I descend from those surnames, but don't have that Y myself.  I can afford to pay for more 12 marker tests & maybe the cousins will get interested & pay for the additional 13 markers later.  I do not want to overly influence people. 14 Dec 2002

James W. Green III
