There has been word circulating for over a year that Mrs. Caleb (Dorcas) Powell Sr. has the maiden name Miles. Now here is a letter that came 3 April 1999 that says the same thing, but with details.

Hello you three:
I received this from Marion Mitola this a.m. We are researching our Boyd ancestor in SC and her correspondent found this while researching. (maybe her cousin). Since my Powell Family mailing list is not up to date and many on Powell and Broom may be interested in this you may want to forward it to those interested in MILES;

Hi, thought this might be of interest to you. Maybe we'll get lucky and find the right Boyd.
Marion then forwards the following message she received:
"... As I told you in my last e-mail, I wanted to do some more work on the MILES LINE. Well I did and finally got some very good results.
DORCAS MILES is the lady who married CALEB POWELL and so on. Dorcas parents are JOSEPH MILES AND ANNE NESMITH. They had 12 childrenl Parents and all kids born in PA. The Miles line goes to 1622 and the Nesmith goes to 1390 from Scotland.
"I'll be putting copies of all this in the snail mail to you. So you can expect that this coming week. I'll be laying out a sheet to find out how many greats this gives us. Oh yes, the Miles are from Wales.
"There are a few more things I need to check out on this but at least its a start.
"Tried to find a Robert Boyd that would fit us. There are a ton of them listed and I ran out of time so will try again when next I go to LDS."

Then Patti Calton went looking for these Miles on the web & posted these urls April 3 1999 to Rosell or the PowellC@OneList.Com list
Notice that only one Dorcas in each database fits our Dorcas who according to census was born 1760 - 1765. Notice according to the 2nd database, that Dorcas died in infancy so is not ours. Notice that the 1st & 3rd databases show her siblings next younger & next older were born in Philadelphia PA while the 1880 census of SC indicates our Dorcas was born in NC. One Dorcas below was born in York SC, but that seems to indicate little. This theory is looking bad.
