McELROYs are allied to (a sept of) Clan MacGillivray & Clan Grant.
I would have chosen Clan McGillivray because
Clan MacGillivray is smaller & thus
1) needs more help
2) McELROY seems to be a variant spelling of MacGillivray
via Mc-EL-ROY > Mc-Il-roy > Mac-Gilli-vray,

McElroy is a Non-MacGillivray Surname (i.e. not a sept of the clan).

BOOK
In an email of 4 Jan 2001 from Susan Toman of California (Susan.Toman@WorldNet.ATT.Net ) she tells me (JWG) there is a book on this family titled, "Family Adventures of John Mackelroy of Maryland, 1690-1983: spelling variations, McElroy, McLeroy, McKleroy, Muckleroy, Muckelroy, etc." compiled and edited by Family Adventures.  The only copy I know of is located at the state Historical Society of Wisconsin (Call number is CS71 M141 1983).  It was published by Family Adventures in San Antonio, TX.  The cost is $300.  It is a typescript of about 3,000 pages.
