REPORT

on

The Ancestry of Samuel Marjoribanks who was born in
Thornhill, Kincardine, Perthshire
in 1770.

Prior to 1855 registrations of Births, Deaths and Marriages in Scotland were voluntarily recorded in the old parochial registers (unindexed) of each parish. The old parochial registers of Morton, Dumfriesshire, and those of Kincardine, Perthshire (both contain the place name Thornhill) were accordingly searched between 1754 and 1774 for the birth of Samuel Marjoriebanks, which was found to have been recorded in the old parochial registers of Kincardine as follows:-
"December 19th 1770. Samuel son to John Marjori- banks and Helen Murdoch, Thornhill."
Other children found to have been recorded to the above couple in the old parochial registers of Kincardine were:- Isobel born 28:11:1773 in Thornhill William " 14:11:1775 " " Mary " 28:12:1777 " " Janet " 20: 2:1780 " " John " 27: 1:1782 " " Thomas " 24: 4:1785 " " Catherine " 11:11:1787 " "

The old parochial registers of Kincardine
were next searched for the marriage of John Marjoribanks and Helen
Murdoch, which was found to have been recorded as follows:-
"25th November 1769 John Marjorybanks (sic) in this parish and Helen Murdoch in Kilmadock listed for proclamation and were married."
This marriage was also found to have been recorded in the old parochial registers of Kilmadock:-
"December 16th 1769 John Marjoribanks in parish of Kincardine and Helen Murdoch in this parish declared their purpose of marriage."
The old parochial registers of Kincardine were then searched for the birth of John Marjoribanks and the following entries were found:- 1) "May 4th 1743 John and Samuel twins to James Marjoribanks and Mart (Margaret) Stewart, wit- nesses John and Samuel Marjorybanks (sic)." Also: James born 23: 8:1728 Mary " 20: 7:1730 Thomas " 6: 8:1732 Anna " 24:11:1734 Janet " 24:11:1736 Alexander " 19:10:1738 Christon " 5: 3:1741

The marriage of James Marjoribanks and
Margaret Stewart was found to have been recorded in the old parochial
registers of Kincardine thus:-
"January 1st 1727 James Marjorybanks (sic), parothner (sic) and Mart. Stewart in Kild (sic) (i.e. Kilmadock) marryed 21st February yeafter."
2) "17th April 1743 John son to Samuel Marjorybanks (sic) and Mary Wright. Witnesses James Marjory- banks and Alexander Gilfillon." Also: Thomas born 6: 6:1727 Katri " 3: 8:1728 John " 24: 8:1729 (presumably died young) Alexander " 13:12:1730 (presumably died young) James " 17: 5:1732 Janet " 14: 6:1733 Mary " 28: 8:1734 Isobel " 21: 0:1735 Sarah " 27:12:1736 Alexander " 26: 3:1738 Margaret " 7:10:1739

The marriage of Samuel Marjoribanks and Mary Wright was found to have been recorded in the old parochial registered of Kindardine thus:-
"July 16th 1726 Samuel Marjorybanks (sic) parothner and Mary Wright in Kyppen married 13th August."

This marriage was also found recorded
in the old parochial registers of Kippen as follows:-
"17th July 1726 Samuel Marjorybanks (sic) Kincard. Mary Wright, Kippen married August 18."
As it appeared possible that James and Samuel Marjoribanks might have been brothers, and research was continued on this assuption. The old parochial registers of Kincardine were next searched from their commencement in 1691 to 1708 for the births of James and Samuel Marjoribanks but the only Marjoribanks birth found to have been recorded during these years was:-
"8th March 1705 John son to Thomas Marjorybanks (sic) and Janet Robson Witnesses James Robson and James Govan."
As both James and Samuel Marjoribanks called sons Thomas, probably after their father, it was thought possible that the above John might have been their younger brother and that the family might have moved into the parish of Kincardine circa 1704. The old parochial registers of the neighbouring parishes of Kincardine, which are Kilmadock (records blank February 1692 to March 1694, and January 1699 to November 1701), Kippen (records start 1700), Gargunnock (records blank May 1698 to January 1700), St. Ninians Lecropt (no extant records prior to 1720), and Port of Menteith, were accordingly searched, were possible, from 1695 to 1705 for the marriage of, and births of earlier children to, Thomas Marjoribanks and Janet Robson, but no relevant entries were found in the extant portions of the records and the investigation was accordingly here concluded.

Questions (to be continued)
1) Page 2 says the parochial registers of Kincardine say "5th November 1769
John Marjorybanks (sic) in this parish and Helen Murdoch in Kilmadock
listed for proclamation and were married."
 a) Did they each go to their own church on Sunday 5 Nov 1769 & ask the
preacher or clerk to list them for proclamation?
 b) If so, how did the Kincardine cleric know on Sunday 5 Nov 1769 what
Helen was doing in Kilmadock that day? Did he take John's word for it
that that was what Helen was doing in her parish that day?
 c) Is listing them for proclamation telling the preacher to proclaim their
banns next Sunday or some future Sunday?
 d) Does that mean announcing from the pulpit during the announcements part
of the worship service that they will be married?
 e) Does "and were married" mean were married later, after December 16th
1769? (I think the banns were actually announced 16 Dec 1769 per the
    following entry.)

2) Page 2 says the parochial registers of Kilmadock say "December 16th 1769
John Marjoribanks in parish of Kincardine and Helen Murdoch in this parish
declared their purpose of marriage."
 a) Dec 16 1769 is a Saturday. Is this a misreading of the parish
    register?
 b) How does this "declaring their purpose" differ from "listed for
proclamation"? Is getting listed where they tell the preacher to
announce the banns & declaring is where the announcement of intention
to marry (banns?) is read to the congregation? There is 1 month & 11
    days between these 2 events.
 c) Is John really at the Kincardine parish church on this Saturday at the
same time Helen is at the Kilmadock parish church on this Saturday?
 d) If so, how did the Kilmadock cleric know on Saturday 16 Dec 1769 what
John was doing in Kincardine that day? Did he take Helen's word for it
that that was what John was doing in her parish that day?
