12 pence (d)=1 shilling (/ or s)
20 shillings (/ or s)=1 pound (£).
For example in the first item (below): "4 Fine shirts at 4/6" means "4 shirts at 4 shillings & 6 pence each".  Since there are 12 pence in a shilling (per table above), 6 pence is half a shilling so 4/6 is 4.5 shillings.  Four shirts times 4.5 shillings/shirt = 18 shillings & is written here with 18 in the shillings column, as 0"18"0.  I think the quotation marks (") are being used as separators & to stand for s & d (shillings & pence), since £ precedes the first number when used below, I figure s & d preceed their numbers but are represented by " which dittos the s & d in the column headings.  These computations give us a back check on reading the values given and thus give us the sense that we can read this manuscript.  If you find any errors, report the error to me, the webmaster, James Green III.

From James Green III's email to Allen Long via the MbanksPerth list 6 Sep 2002,
this is my comparison of the above inventory to
the inventory of John Peat, upholsterer of Edinburgh, who died in 1776,
from Scottish clothes for persons of various social standing.

    Some Questions
  • Do John Marjorybanks' overhauls look like today's overhauls?
  • Why is the ship coat & jacket only 4s while
the 1 Blue Cloath Coat & Jacket,
the 1 Black Coat & Jacket, and
the 1 Blue Coat & Jacket are each 12s?
That is, why is a Coat & Jacket 3 times the cost of a ship coat & jacket?
  • What is the difference between a cloath[sic, cloth?] coat & a [plain] coat?
  • What is a seek?

This is part of Robert Mills' 1825 map of Chester County SC showing Upper Fishing Creek Presbyterian Church & Lower Fishing Creek Presbyterian Church (also called Richardson's & Burnt Meeting House).  Usually it is said that John Marjorybanks is buried at Upper Fishing Creek Presbyterian.  Nina W. Barrett found a reference to his being buried at Lower Fishing Creek.  His grave has not been found at either place.  N.B. that John's estate is probated in York County & not Chester County.

I slid the parts of title block tighter together & moved title block, scale & "YORK" over the part of map that is of interest, slid bearing south of the county line, & cropped to the selection shown above.  This map was a 450K jpg that I copied from http://www.scroots.org/1825chester3.html.
