Her other great-grandfather Charles Wilson was Professor of Oriental Languages. Mary Cook's father George Cook was Dean of the Thistle and Professor of Moral Philosophy at St Andrews, as was his father John Cook, and her great-great-great-grandfather Alexander Pitcairne was the Principal of St Andrews. Katherine Laurie's father Gilbert Laurie was twice Lord Provost of Edinburgh and her great-grandfather Lord Cardross lived in North Carolina for a time in the latter half of the seventeenth century but returned to Europe.
